Question can you run cooling fans without resistors

Can the cooling fans handle being used without the speed resistors

Yes, but only at full speed. I don't have the resistors, so I'm not sure what (if any) rewiring might be required to make that work properly.

This said, my fans are the late fans and they run directly off battery voltage via servos hooked to my water pump controller. The resistors aren't necessary.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to shorten the wires that go to the resistors & join them.(no resistors)I'm not gonna use the temp switch on the rad. I'm going to use the temp switch wires with toggle switches to turn on manually. So the relay will still be used. Does that sound ok.

I'm going to use a light weight race battery & I don't want the fans running after the engine is off. I would also like to control both fans manually. Cheers

Sounds good... the PO of my 951 had a switch hooked up to do that. The PO of my 944 has them set up to run all the time. Loud, but effective.

All sounds good. Technically speaking, you don't need the relays if you have sufficiently sized switches. I'd probably still go with the relays simply to keep the load lines short.

Regardless of which you go for, don't neglect the fuses. 16 amps for the early (3 blade) fans, 25 for the late (6 blade) fans.

FWIW, the 3 blade fan only pulled about 6-7 amps @ 12v when I had it on a voltage supply. I had cut the blades off and was using it for an unrelated project...

Including startup? The 6 blade fans don't consistently pull 16 even on startup (as evidenced by the fact that I briefly ran them on 16 amp fuses), but they'll definitely blow 16 amp fuses on startup.

Thanks,I'm going to use the relay as I'm using the original wires that turn on the fans(6 blade)& wire them up to switches. The original wires from the temp switch on rad.
