need help removing heater control unit
 

Hey Guys,
I own a 1984 944 N/A.
I need to replace the heater control unit that sits right above my radio in the center console. The cable that controls the amount of heat that comes into the cabin is damaged and where it connect to the HCU the plastic is broken. I have located a good used one and am just waiting for it to arrive. The problem I have is I have taken off everything that I know how to take off but still need better access to the unit from the top in order to disconnect the cables and install the new one. I was hoping to just remove the top half of the center console where the oil pressure gauge is and the clock. I removed the 2 screws on the top left and right of the silver cover plate that the oil pressure gauge and clock sits in. Also removed the front of the rotating fan switch. I also removed 2 little screws along the bottom beveled edge directly under the silver face plate. I can move the top half of the center console out approx. 1/2 inch but it won't come any further. Something is still connected but I don't know what or where it is. I's assuming this is the correct approach to replacing the heater control unit. Any advice on how to get around this problem would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a pic of where I am at this point.:confused:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1413909161.jpg

There are 2 tiny screws at the bottom of the silver face plate bottom lip near the sides.
You have to use a very tiny wrench or a pair of needle nose pliers to unscrew.

Use a mirror at each side below the word "brake" and on the other side.

Apparently I have forgotten the year my car was made.
It is a 1983 not 1984 as I originally posted.:o
Anyway, thanks for the replys. I did ck the '87 924s thread.
Unfortunately, it didn't offer any new info.
Will double ck to see if I missed any screws.

I think there are 2 plastic connectors on the bottom of the gauge cluster that snap into the main console. They will most likely break if you try to mess with them.
I don't think you will have enough room with just the gauges out anyway, there's a ton of crap back there. I would just remove the center console. It's pretty easy.

A long time ago, SoCal Driver had a fix for this problem. I've had the same problem for over a decade, the PO prior to that, for years as well. I just close the vents when the a/c is not on. Don't need much heat here.

Anyway, do a search for his name. RIP Hugh.

On mine there is a screw on each side of the clock and oil, on the outsides of the console, they were embedded in the carpeting on my car. There are also 2 screws behind the 3 heat/cool sliders on the console.
