How much clack from this fellah?

So my car had a pronounced knocking noise, a couple of bits are missing from the skirt of piston 3, and I think it might be cracked too. So did this cause the noise, or will it prove to be the bearings which are knackered now from metallic bits in the oil.? The investigation continues.. too damn slowly as other life stuff keeps happening.

Cast your votes now..
My guess is that if it were cracked across at the little end, that would possibly make a hell of a clack. :-)

cheers
Rissole

progress this evening

So managed to take a few more things apart this evening.
I turned the engine over, and took the head off.
Didn't look too bad from this side.

The Head looks OK, though running a bit rich...

And this is the state I abandoned it in after a couple of hours this evening.
Oh for a decent sized garage.

Tomorrow, I start taking the pistons out, and can have a look at the damage...

cheers
Rissole

Sell good 2.7 head for $1000+ and you can swap right to a good turbo or 944S motor!

Not for the faint hearted

Ok, here we go.

Piston out. Yep, pistonbroke.

Bad bore. Oh this is nasty...

T'other side. Think this bore maybe beyond recovery...

And a nice one... the other 3 are like this.

Hmmm. So what happened.? Did the piston fatigue crack first, and then flap wildly scoring the bore so horribly, or did something clout it to knock those skirt chunks out, with it cracking later.
Hey Ho. The fun continues...
Cheers

You will never know for sure it could have been detonation or just fatege after years of use.

The real question is rebuild or new / used motor.

okay, i am going give one possibility: i am thinking that the piston skirt lost part of its coating and then the galling started. that led to some eventual binding/wear which cracked the piston.

You can get the bore(s) replated at US Chrome. I've had them do a GSXR aluminum block motor for me, about to maybe send another their way, and another buddy (eorhnberger) had them do his 944S2 motor. They'll need the pistons too, to match it all up. They're the ones everyone else sends the business to, it seems. Cut out the middleman!
U.S. Chrome Corporation of Wisconsin Cylinder Repair Company

Sadly, in my most recent case, the piston looked far worse than yours, thanks to dropping two intake valves at 12,500 rpm!

Sorry, no idea re: your piston failure...
