Rear hatch tint?

I've taken my car to 2 different tint shops around Modesto, Ca and both failed to get the job done. Called all over and got estimates for $350 and $400. Not going to pay that kind of money. Is that the going rate for 944's? Am I stuck sporting a fishbowl?

Consider doing it yourself?

I looked into it about year ago in Atlanta and was quoted $400 as well.

I only know how to easily take it off, not put it on :)

How?

I posted the procedure a while back. Cut a black plastic bag to proper glass shape. Mix ammonia and 409 spray cleaner (50/50) and, out in the sun, spray the tint thoroughly, apply the black bag to the tint and using a sponge, smooth it out and wait 1/2 hour to 45 mins. Start at one corner and peel slowly inward. It should come off easily, leaving no adhesive to clean up.

Bought a hatch and I removed the old bubbling tint w/ a steam machine, Purple power and a little 409.

tint shops know 944's and how much of a pita they are. (curved glass)
most are done in two pieces. Get the warranty if you pay the coin. you'll probably use the warranty...

Paid $275 to have my rear hatch done, they did it in individual strips laid between each wire of the window defroster...came out FANTASTIC....that was three years ago.

Did the same and discovered the defroster grid had been cut and had to be repaired...

I asked at a tint place 3 years ago about doing the rear glass - guy told me there was a film that could be stretched to do the glass in one piece - car got wrecked so I never followed up on it - didn't get a real quote moneywise - anybody heard of this stuff

The last guy mentioned that they were trying it in one piece and one of the problems was that the tint only shrinks in one direction. I don't have a problem with multiple pieces as long as it doesn't show, but I'm pretty much of the idea that I won't have tint. Maybe I'll try it myself with the little strips, who knows.

Well I got hooked up to Tint Specialists in Jacksonville, and they did a fantastic job on the whole car for less than $300.
