944 Dash Board
My dash is cracked and some of the switches dont work..
Any thoughts on removing the dash? How hard is it? What hidden dangers should I be looking for? Thanks Coupe ![]() |

Threw a good one away a couple of months ago. Didn't want to take it out of the car.
Which switches are not working? The one on the climat control?

Interesting. The later model dashes have the better air flow. You need to check all of the links to the vacuum actuators and the vacuum hoses under the dash on the air box.
If the switches are being pushed back into the trim panel you will have to take off the trim pieces and hot glue the switches in from the back. Just a dab at each end where the retaining tabs are broken out. The screws that hold the trim pieces in are both behind the pop out covers and inside the vents. The trim comes off easy when you find all of the screws. The switches in the climate control module are replaceable. Most people just buy a good used one.

Along the same lines, I want to yank the instrument cluster from my early '85. I pulled the steering wheel, unscrewed the screws above the instruments, took apart the plastic housing around the ignition switch, and then chickened out when several pieces of plastic started bending the way they do right before they snap.
Any tips? I'm trying to get to the gauges to clean up some of the contacts. The lights tend to go out randomly, and a good hard smack to the underside of the dash usually fixes things until the next big bump. Thanks in advance.

Charles,
You can reach the back of the light switch and the dash light dimmer from under the dash -- lower left. You will have to get the drivers seat back as far as you can and maybe remove the steering wheel. I would venture a guess that the dash light problem is with the rotary dimmer not the instrument cluster itself. Taking off the two covers over the turn signal wiper switch assembly is a trick but they can be bent a bit. Think there is a twist or two that helps. I've not broken any but have striped the screw bosses out.

Plus, a wire appears to be loose on the fuel economy gauge. Most of the time, it reads as though it doesn't know what the car speed is (gallons/hour instead of MPG), and it will bounce between the two readings on bumpy roads. So after finagling the turn signal junk off of the steering column, what next? Does the instrument cluster just pop out (again, after removing the top screws)? Also, how do the wire harnesses come off the back of the gauges? Are they twist-lock connectors, or do they just pull straight off? thanks,

I disconnect the battery and slide the turn signal assembly off a bit. Have to watch the connectors but it does slide out far enough to let the instruments come out.
The speedo cable may hold the cluster back a bit but not so you can't get to the lamps. The wiring on the back of the instruments uses plugs. Think there is a single wire that runs between the instrument lights. Been a while since I've removed mine.

I have an Acroat file of a detailed article written by Scott Levy. It deals with the removal of the dash, and contains some nice pics. Unfortunately, this forum does not allow me to attach pdf files. If you are interested, shoot me an e-mail, and I send it to you.
