New technology to improve our old cars
I'd be really interested in one of these stereos if the price was around £200
BBC - Autos - Porsche GPS unit is a classic time machine

I'm getting older and that's appears too small for these old eyes.

I added a parrot BlueTooth module behind the stock radio. It takes over the speakers whenever it needs to. I use my phone for navigation and the directions come out the radio speakers. I used 1980's connectors and installed it with no spices.

I don't need new technology in my "old school" Porsche, especially something that small that sits low on the console. I have never used a GPS, and never will, because I can't stand the sound of them interrupting my conversation or music to demand that I turn left. I'll print off a mapquest map and get a mental picture in my mind of where to go, and then not hardly have to even look at the copy......of course, I don't need or want a cell phone either.

So what happens if in 1994 I spent 4,000 to have my radio headunit covered in matching Magenta leather in my 968? With silk-screened yellow text? What do I do? I want modern tech but want to retain my expensive Special Wishes Magenta leather on everything! Can Porsche make me a matching unit?!?!?!?
![]() Wow, that's a lot of work. Good job! That is quite the "OEM+" mod! No spices? Even better!

There was a guy who grafted a 9" (or something like that) TV screen into the early dash center speaker hole. Not my cup of tea (personally) but I had to admire the work done.

I wish i still had the orig. Blaupunkt instead of the cheap jvc cd player one of the P.O.s installed.
I found his number on an old service record. He said he threw the blaupunkt away!!!

Norcalmike,
I have an after market Alpine single CD player, which with its dark grey and black face plus subtle green display fits in nice with my black dash. If you didn't know better it does look original. Had this CD player for many years, its been in a few Porsche and even used abroad. The problem with aftermarket equipment is you have to get quality kit. This one is a 4x40watt output and seems to be more powerful than a lot of the newer units claiming to be 4x50watt or above. In my opinion JVC quality tanked in the late 1990's - early 2000's and has never recovered. |

I got an early Blaupunkt Brisbane. . .cheap, light, no optical drive. Uses front input and SD cards. Subtle yet modern. . .I like it.
Oh, and REASONS NOT TO RELY TOO HEAVILY ON GPS.
