Question please help, was told 86 brembo front cal fit rear

I have 87 front spindles and hubs and 87 brembo front calipers. They fit. I have 86 brembo front calipers and they don't fit the rear. Off by about 1/8". Do I need rear calipers for 86 na car. I have the turbo rear rotors. I was told the front 86 brembo would fit rear and they don't. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The pistons are different sizes internally. You do not want the resulting brake bias of putting front brakes on the rear!

Rear need spacer washer. Look at the PET. Part number 8. You can get OEM washer from dealer or similar washer from hardware store.

In my opinion it is not good to run front calipers on the rear. Front calipers have 36/40mm pistons whilst the rears have same size external castings but 28/30 pistons.

The system is set up for smaller pistons at the rear. If you run fronts on the rear you run the rist of too much rear bias which is pretty undesirable/dangerous.

I strongly recommend you get some S2 or turbo rear calipers. Incidentally these will also require the same spacer.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, that's great. I thought using a spacer would be trying to make a wrong size caliper fit. I can use the 86 front in the rear. 87 are bigger with bigger pistons and thicker rotors. The 86 front won't fit over the 87 rotors. Don't know if you can tell in the pics but the 87 on left are bulkier and wider with larger pistons. Thanks

The calipers for the 944 ( excluding the turbo S ) are the same size, the pistons are different in size . In the rear you use the smaller piston calipers and also use the bias valve from a turbo, as as mentioned earlier you'll need to use a spacer washers also used by the turbos on the rear only .

Thanks, that means I have front and rear calipers. When I got them I was told they were all front. I thought the 87 were bigger than the 86. I see guys put adjustable valves on the rear line at the master.

The proportional valve from a 944 turbo is used at the master cyl , (front port ) .

I'm getting a bit confused here. The 944's fitted with Brembo calipers, 86/87 turbo, S2's and 88 onwards turbo S all had the same size rear calipers with 28/30 pistons. I really wouldn't use anything bigger than that of you will end up with too much rear bias.

To the best of my knowledge there were only 2 sizes of front brembo calipers. 86/87 turbo and non M030 S2 had 36/40 pistons and the '88 onwards and rare M030 S2 cars had 36/44 piston calipers which were also used on 928 S4 and 993 C2's. The larger calipers are attached with bolts from above, the 'std' brembo calipers were side fixed. There were no larger front calipers for '87 cars.

Also a good tip if you have the brembo's off is to remove and clean behind and grease with HT ceramic paste the back of the spring plates, which if not maintained corrode from stainless steel vs alloy reaction and eventually push forward and jam the brake pads. On the red caliper it looks like someone has painted straight over them and also painted over the dust seals and pistons .... That isn't great.

Brakes are an area where you need to take great care. Be careful!!

Sorry guys for being a dummy and causing confusion. The guy I bought these off said they were 4 front calipers. Thanks to you all I know now that I have a front and rear set and learned the rear use spacers. I appreciate the tip on the calipers. I'm the dummy that painted the red set. They looked clean and in very good shape so I didn't feel like taking them apart which I should have. I used a 2 part high temp ceramic paint. 3 parts paint,1part hardener and 1 part reducer. The pistons and seals got just a light dusting of over spray. After trying different thickness hard washers I found a set that fit nice for spacers. Thanks for all the help and tips

brakes

The rotors are 13 inch they do fit S and non S spindles the calipers are 993 or the 928 s4s...but honestly a good set of pads on the 951 calipers and high temp fluid and steel lines will do the trick.
I use the big blacks on my 968 turbo as well as my 88 Turbo S . but Ive been building these cars for years and some times i get a little board and over do it some times ...at the end of the day for me it's the fun of the build .

Hey your on the right track, have fun keep a budget in mind and Enjoy working on the car your self....THATS the FUN doing it your self the accomplishment we don't reinvent the wheel we make it go faster .

Wow,very nice looking cars. Great job. There's no satisfaction with out the challenge. I've built a few cars, for myself and others. I find this 944 to be the most fun to work on. Great little cars
