Boost and vacuum issues...

I picked up an '86 951 today. It seems to idle a little rough and starts off a little rough until it gets to about 2000rpms then it runs like a really solid n/a. It doesn't seem to have any boost at any rpms. The PO replaced head, the fuel pressure regulator, vacuum lines, and cycling valve, to no avail. The good news is, I have another turbo that runs great to use parts from to diagnose. Any ideas on where to start?
Thanks!

Do you have an air compressor or access to one? A boost leak tester is easy to make and can be a huge help in these situations. That is where I would start.

Drive it around and check the pipe between the wastegate and the cat. If it's hot, WG is stuck open = no boost.

also, make yourself the led KLR blink code dealio. that will tell you if it is in limp mode and, perhaps, why.

also, a large vacuum leak can turn into a large boost leak. i'd look for splits or other issues on the high pressure side of the intake system, from the turbo to the cylinder head.

I pulled the wastegate open- no valve in it...at all. Probably why it wouldn't boost!

this begs the question: where did it go? is it possible for the exhaust system to swallow it?

I literally found it- in the exhaust pipe behind the wastegate, the pipe that runs along the cat converter.

If his turbo sucked a valve back UP the exhaust, there'd probably more going on than just a busted turbo.

FYI, the turbocharger is downstream from the wastegate, where the valve is missing.

Perhaps I have it backwards in my head, but if the valve face broke off, wouldn't it fall into the post-turbo side of the exhaust, much like a manhole cover can't fall INTO the sewer?

Don't scare me with stuff like that. I'm still working on my newly acquired 951 and I this turbo stuff fogs my mind sometimes.

WOW! It's amazing how much better a car can run when all of the pieces are back in order! Looks like I made a good deal on this turbo.
