86 944 center consola removal
I've found threads on pre-85.5 944 center console removal but none on post-85.5. I need to remove my 86 center console to troubleshoot the rear speakers (not working after PO installed new JVC stereo). I'm pulling the stereo this morning but doubt I'll be lucky enough to find something as simple as a loose connection right there. Any help, tips or links is appreciated.

No need to pull the console apart, just pull the radio out first and look for a bad connection or improper wiring. If the speakers worked before, it is most likely wired wrong.
Next thing to check are the speakers themselves. I have one 944 with three out of four bad speakers due to age. Replacing rear speakers is s bit of a pain. Let us know if you need advice on this. To remove radio, slide the storage compartment out, then reach in behind the radio and slide it out. There should be enough slack in the radio wires to leave everything hooked up while you troubleshoot it. Last edited by djnolan; 05-02-2015 at 07:27 AM.. |

Before you tear everything out check to see if you have a fader knob in the centre consol.
If that's all the way forward you will have no rear speakers, It is more likely though that the PO fitted the head unit poorly. Lost count of the number of head unit rewires I've done after a PO has spent hundreds if not thousands on nice stereo equipment and then botched the install. My current 944 had expensive aftermarket speakers all round thanks to the PO, unfortunately the fronts were installed without the correct spacers so they were grounding out on the door internals and the rears were wired back to front although that was not the biggest offense, he had cut the rear panels to remove and fit the new rear speakers. Replacement panels cost me more than the speakers would have. Still when its done right they sound good. Best of luck, |

The front/rear fader knob in the console doesn't do anything. The fader control on the stereo does seem to work if The rear speakers were hooked up right. So I figure if I pull the stereo I can check the wiring and meter the rear speakers to check the ohms. I'm pretty sure, with my luck, I'll have to pull the console unless there is enough wire to work with. So if anyone has step by step instructions or a link I can work off of that would be great.

Doubt you'll need to pull the console you just need to get the correct eight speaker wires connected correctly to the head.
However if you must pull the console it's really easy. After you have removed the head unit and the arm rest storage it's pretty obvious. |

That's what I was hoping to hear. I hate to just start tearing into things without knowing if there are going to be any surprises ahead.
Thanks |
