Hood won't stay up

My 944 hood won't stay up. The thin pneumatic spring loaded rods/levers (what are they called) have lost their mojo.

2 questions. 1. Are they easy to find 2. How do you get the original ones off? can you hit them with a hammer (as they appear to be on a nipple)

thanks for all your help

much appreciated

Mine had a spring clip on the end. A small screwdriver pops the clip off.

Any brand is good. Cheap or OEM last about the same for the front hood.

If you have trouble, get a 3 foot crowbar and pry the ends off. If the pin breaks off, use superglue to stick it back on. JK

Did this on my 83 NA a couple of years ago, with a person to help it's not a difficult job. Find yourself some cardboard to put in between the hood corners and the A pillar. The bottom clip is easily removed with a small common/flat screwdriver then it pulls off the pivot ball. It easily presses back on. My hood now stays open like a new car.

13" Stanley Wonder bar

After you get the old strut off clean and then wipe a little grease on the ball.

To compress the new one enough to get the socket of the strut on the ball I used a flat Stanley Wonder bar to lever/lift/compress the shock up enough to pop the socket onto the ball. The wonder bar has a tear-drop hole that cradles the strut socket end and keeps it from sliding around. A block of wood helps keep the bar from damaging the car body and puts the lever at the right height. It works best with three or four hands but it can be done alone.

I wish they used a prop rod instead of these shocks which don't last that long. Good luck.

5min. job maximum, just as everyone else has said, don't over extend the hood and break your windshield.

You'll be glad you spent $25 on hood struts, no more grab the piece of wood prop, and no fear of it slamming on your head while working under the hood.
