944 broke? Buy another one!

Well, that's not exactly how it went.

I have been making little progress on the 951, and periodically peruse CL for parts, cars, etc. But my wife was looking at ads to find one of the kids a cheap car, and she finds a very poorly listed ad for a 944 that did not show up on a search for "porsche 944". It was listed by a person with poor English as a 2015(!) model year.

I looked at the ad, and about 2 hours later it's in my yard. Of course. It ran great, until it drained the battery overnight after about 4 days, and would not restart after charging. Did all the usual DME and spark/fuel checks, (has spark, no pressure at the rail, power at terminals 87b-30, swapping in known good DME relay did nothing, so I think I have isolated it to a bad fuel pump, so that is so far the only big problem. Need the drop the pump cover and check voltage at the pump, but I think that's the issue.

Now, It's an automatic, but I actually am fine with that. 1985.5 in Alpine White (my favorite, of course), and the paint is in great shape after a wash and wax. The engine bay is fantastic and clean, and despite a lack of records, the engine has been out of it, and many parts are painted (red or black, like cam tower and intake, etc.,). Not my style, but everything is super clean and all original except for the painted parts. A lot of common 944 stuff has been replaced (ref sensors, fuel line jumper, etc.) so someone was maintaining it anyway.

I have been pecking away at the typical little glitches, but for the princely sum of $1500 I feel I got got a great deal. I'll do the belts and drive it as a DD while I keep going on the turbo (which keeps veering farther and farther from stock...)

Sure feels great to drive a 944 again. I forgot how fun it is!

I plan to put some Fuchs and new tires on it, and keep it 100% stock as a easy going daily driver.

Jeff

for what you paid for it, you got a deal! One of the things that frequently fail in these cars is DME relay. It runs the fuel pump. See Clarks garage for the jumper check of the fuel pump. Also, Check the alarm to see if it's causing the problem.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Filly, that looks great! I really like your wheels. My turbo is Alpine white, also. Or was.

Seven, I already went through all of that (see orig. post). It is in fact the fuel pump, got 12 volts to it but not pumping...it is a remanufactured pump from 2011, says the sticker on it. I don't even recall seeing reman pumps anywhere.

Should be running again today! Then back to work on the 951.

Thanks ditch, took her out tonight for a maiden voyage around the neighborhood, not inspected or registered since I put it away last summer for a major maintenance overhaul:

All new:
Belts(timing,balance,alt,p/s)
16 radiator hoses & clamps
water pump & both thermostats(for turbo and engine)
cam tower re-sealed (back and tower to head)
power steering reservoir
All 8 front sway bar bushing replaced
New oil seals, mylar seals(onion seals), balance shaft races, oil pump drive gear
New rollers, tensioner's, pulley's
Kenwood Bluetooth receiver
New stainless steel bolts, nuts, washers where I could find them and replace them
J-Boot
Vacuum Lines
Fuel jumper Line
ISV Hoses and clamps
Intake Manifold gaskets

General maintenance:
Rear Diff Fill and Drain bolts
Rear Diff gear oil drained and filled
VR1 20w-50 oil change w/K&N oil Filter
Flushed radiator/fluid/refilled
Cleaned and refreshed the gauge cluster with new bulbs, cleaned pcb tracings (all gauges work now)
Air filter

Rebuilt the power steering unit with Rennbay Kit
Local company rebuilt/refurbed the injectors with new o-rings, filter, pintle caps, flow tested, sandblasted and cleaned them up nice and shiny.

I think I used 20-25 toothbrushes cleaning all of the muck, grease, general nastiness from 25+ years of grime, oil spills, and oil leaks from the engine compartment.

It took me all winter to do it working slowly and ordering parts from Pelican and the while your in there effect happened, so it required more time, money and removal of items that were just easier to get to while I had it all apart.

That and a very patient wife and kids who gave me the time to do this after work/weekend/whenever I had the ambition to do so.

That's awesome. Im halfway through a lot of those tasks on the 951, now I got this second one and it is kicking my butt.

Seven, I was wrong about my fuel pump. It sparked when I checked with the meter, now no voltage. But I have another post describing everything I've checked in greater detail.

Any more Alpine white car pi s anyone?

Jeff
