944 timing belt

Guys, I just purchased a 84 944 with 9,000 original miles. Car is AWSOME but have a question. Does anyone know the approx. cost (parts and labor) to change timing belt, water pump and additional needed items? Thanks for any help you can provide

DIY runs about $500 - 600 for parts plus about $300 or so for Arnworks tension gauge and wrench kit. Don't know the hire price. Need to recheck tension after a few hundred miles.

There's no way we could. 31 years, 9K miles. Additional items might list a clutch, as it's rubber centered.

Replace the timing and balance belt, check the WP, rollers and tensioners. Drive it, but monitor for oil leaks.

IMO, I would not drive nor start your car until the Cam and Balance Belts are changed. The recommend change is 30k or 3 years whichever comes first. If the Cam Belt is the original one it is way overdue, if it brakes it will bend the valve stems. There are plenty of You Tube videos showing how to change out the Belts and Water Pump. Clark's Garage.com is another place to bookmark for added maintenance help.

Cheers,
Larry

I'd say if you are making a list of things that need to be done to a 31 year old engine that hasn't been broken in yet, you might as well print out the entire part 1 of the workshop manual! Are you going to DD this thing or do you just want to replace the timing belt on it so you can drive it into the museum? Haha!

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I politely ask... Do you mind letting us know how much you paid for her?

If I were in your shoes (assuming the car was well-treated for its 9K miles), I'd seriously consider dropping the engine and doing a complete reseal - after which I'd run with synthetic oil. Lots of other stuff to also consider for a thirty one year old "unused" car...flush/change all fluids, tires, change dried rubber bushings and seals, etc. Do more of this now, to mitigate what could otherwise be some deleterious effects of running with old and dried out components, and you can realize a fantasy that I'm sure we all share - that of driving a "new" 944!

Belts and rollers $210-$250 depending which brand of belt you want Gates/Conti
WP $100 from ZIMS

Just belts/rollers should be 3 hours labor MAX
Adding WP could be 3-4 more hours in case of broken bolts, required cleaning, etc

Sell it after your put $600 into it for the front seal job, timing belt kit (rollers, tensioners wp, belts(alt/ps). The clutch will cost you over $1000 in parts, plus labor. A car sitting this long with 9k on it, IMO is worse than a daily driver.

You rubber seals, gaskets, hoses, fuel lines are inevitably bad/dry rotted for a 31yo car. If you decide to keep it, plan on spending $$$$.

If you plan on keeping it, replace your fuel lines up front at least (supply, return, and jumper), fuel filter, as all else have said, belts, hoses, front engine oil seals, clutch, water pump, etc etc.

Sell it now, while you can make money
