Arrow My new car story-Merc Benz/not 944

Well guys, I'm still looking for a 944, one like the other poster just posted about buying. But, I ran into a car someone wanted to unload with a really cool history and I took it. Here's the scoop.

My uncle was in town (a judge and former Asst. Dean of the state law school) and a friend of his had recently passed away (friend was a state supreme court judge). The decedent's widow still had his old Mercedes, a 1984 300D with the turbo diesel. She was going to just give it away (charity) or give it to my uncle, but I offered to check it out. The car is dark blue, all power stuff works, its immaculate, cleaner than my '92 Explorer, the engine bay was pristine, the interior in fine shape except for a few chips on the wooden parts of the dash and the clock doesn't work, but it runs like a champ. A new set of Pirelli's were just put on and the moon roof works, too. It passes emissions, etc., no problems. The only fault I could find was a little rust by the rear drivers side wheel well and a dime sized rust spot on the driver side sill. It has 220K miles on it, but its a diesel and its clean and has documented maintenance-she and her husband were the only owners. She still has the purchase order and everything.

Well, I looked up the blue book value for the car in this condition and it rang in at $1250. She wanted $3500. I offered $1400 to account for the new tires, and she'll call me back tomorrow but said she doesn't see any problem with the offer. She knows I'm a law student, too.

So, as of tomorrow I will most likely have a new ride. Not a hot roddin' Porsche yet but a sweet ride with a cool history-if you're a law nerd like me!

Wow, nice car. I really like old Mercedes-Benz cars, they have lots of charachter and heritage. So, looks like you'll be in law school driving an Explorer, the Mercedes, and a 944 when you find one? Wow, when I get to law school (got a couple more years of college) I'll most likely be driving an old POS Honda or Toyota or something. Maybe an old Miata if I'm lucky. The 944 will stay in my parent's garage at home

I had an '82 turbodiesel. As I recall, the shift from first to second was very abrupt. Other than that, it was a good car.

Thumbs up

My friend has a 70something 240D that he treats like $hit (drive untill something breaks-tow to mechanic-repeat as needed) and it refuses to die!
Check it for rust but othewise sounds like a good deal, those cars are tanks!

My dad has an 86 300sd that i will be gettting next year when i my liscense (that is if i can raise enough for a 944). Its dark blue too, and has 300,000 miles on it and still running great, althogh some of the electrical gadgets are starting to go, lights, windows, sunroof, etc. It also has atlot of new stuff, like a new transission, steering arms, and many other thigs, all and all its a great car.

One of the funnest cars I've ever driven was a mecedes turbo diesel. The turbo lag I think is half the fun, the other half is the fact that these cars are the most reliable ones ever built! His car is going on 400,000 miles! And its still on its original turbo! That car is what german engineering represents!

Let me know if you want a parts source for Mercedes parts at good prices. I currently have 3 Mb's, two of which are older models.
