where is the oil drain plug?
Pathetic question, but I am new to this, and before I screw something up I'd like to know what I am doing. The Haynes manual was very helpful: "Locate the drainplug". HA! Its an 86 951. I suspect the drainplug is under one of the plates on the underbody, but I want to be sure like I said.
Thanks- |

You're correct! Remove the center plastic belly pan. Its on the passenger side of the oil pan.
Check your copper crush ring before you re-install, if its warped or pitted spend the extra .30 for a new one.

1st oil change? Awesome- Stop paying those bastards at Jiffy Lube to do something a monkey can do.
Remember to run a layer of oil on your new oil filter gasket- it helps is seat and not leak. Also, you don't have to make the filter insanely tight- just snug. Be a trooper and take your old old to a recycle center vs dumping it in your gutter. |

got it
well, I wasn't expecting the plug to be on the side, but it was. And it was a pain to get it off. I also learned that when you take off the oil filter, oil goes everywhere. Needless to say, I'll have to buy some of that oil spill cleanup stuff from Pep boys tomorrow. And is there a way to get the god**** filter off without getting oil spilled all over the place? I was being really careful, but it spilled all down onto the ground.
Anyhow, at least its done. Only took 7 hours.

Next time take a long screwdriver or punch, and pop a hole in the top of the filter prior to unscrewing it.
Thats releases the suction and all the oil flows back into the engine. Makes for a clean removal.

ramm, I am sympathetic with your plight. When I crawled under my car for the first oil change (and I've done hundreds of oil changes on other vehicles) I had to consult the Haynes manual to make sure I wasn't draining whater liquid was in the wierd looking heat sink that was where the oil pan should be. Checked it twice, actally, it doesn't look like an oil pan. Then the filter was insanely mad, tight. Did the screw driver thru the filter gig and it ripped right out. finally got it off with a pair of channel locks.
A tip: make sure the gasket from the old filter didn't stay on the oil filter housing. I've saved two cars off of the side of the road miles from jiffy lube where they left the old ring on, and all the oil leaked out.

Yep! I ran a jumper from 30 to 87/87b and it still will not start. This week we're going to have the DME box tested to see if its bad.

Since it's been ssiting for a while I would remove all of the electrical connections to the various devices and clean them well. Including grounds and such.
Bad DME's are very rare.

If I run the jumper (30 to 87/87b), will I have current running to the injectors (switch on) or do I have to spin the motor to check for current. I did a quick look in my referrence documents and I didn't see how much current and/or votlage I should be getting.
Just so y'all have something to laugh about...... I was putting in my 4-sp trans back in my stang today and the trans dropped on my fingers, therefore I'm a little slow (please no comments on me being mentally slow, I know that already) doing my mechanic work and typing! Later

I put the jumper on 30 & 87/87b and the pump is running but I have 0 volts running to the injectors (switch is on). Sounds like a bad DME box????
It may be rare that the DME goes out, but Murphy's law of expensive parts kicks in: If the possibility of two parts going out, Murphy's law will always determine that its the most expensive part that needs replacing! In my case the $200 plus DME box is bad compared to a $20 DME Relay!!!!

Not necessarily the DME. In almost all 944's the injector's power comes directly from the DME relay.
The DME takes the hot injectors to ground to open them. Check and make absolutely sure you jumpered from 30 to socket 87 as there are two wires that branch off of this pin. One goes to the DME to power it and the other goes to the injectors to power them. You can pull the plug off of the DME and check at the plug for the current from DME relay pin/socket 87. Here's the pins to check. 18 and 35 are the pins that the DME relay provide power to. If these pins are hot with the jumper from 30 to 87 and the key is on then there is a wiring problem between the DME relay socket and the injectors. Pins 16, 17 and 19 should be grounds. Use a test light or digital meter to check these.

OK We're about to take a look at the #18 & 35 pins on the DME connector in a few minutes, but I had to go back to this web to get a copy of this diagram (thanks again Hugh). I have a question; While I was pulling the DME box out, I noticed that there was a black plastic male connector with four wires. It wasn't hooked up to anything and I'm clueless to what it is; anyone know what this connector is for?
![]() Update....I checked the 18 & 35 pin on the MDE connector with the DME relay jumpers (30 to 87/87b) and the pins are hot. I'm going to start a new post on this one since I need to run down the fuel injection wiring short.
