Steering shaft bearing problem?

I noticed a few days ago that my car was making a new rattling noise when I started out. And if I held the steering wheel very tight it would go away. So assuming it was a loose bolt holding the steering shaft/column on, I went under the dash to tighten it. Then I noticed that there is a bearing where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. This bearing has slid up the shaft, towards the steering wheel, and was about half way out. I was able to easily push it back in with my fingers. But nothing's holding this bearing in??? That can't be right.

I see there is a bearing holder, but I'm wondering if mine is broke. Anyone else have this problem. The bearing holder is about $130 so I'm not just going to buy it unless it's really broken (#23).

Some internet wisdom so best taken with a grain of salt.

New Steering shaft bearing Nightmare removal

I believe the bushing includes a new bearing but mine sticks out a bit.
