I have a 944 Porsche 1985, 2.5 motor. I have slack at the top of the steering column. I can see the top bearing see photo but I cannot see any plastic ring or the rest of one. So my question is can I insert this sleeve or do I need to replace the

So my question is can I insert this sleeve or do I need to replace the bearing. If I need to replace the bearing how difficult is this to do ?

You need 171-419-341-OEM, and I do not think you need the whole bearing. Honestly I have not done one of these, and am not 100% sure. We are in the process of writing a tech article on how to replace the bearing, more info will be up soon in the 951 Tech section.

You'll need to replace the plastic collar. The sleeve should still be pliable but the plastic collar usually gets brittle and crumbles and there is not always a trace of it when the column is apart. When the collar goes bad it will cause axial play in the steering column.

the plastic clear sleeve fits between the bearing and the steering shaft.
yours probably disintegrated and fell out.
it is really hard to fit the new one but it will go eventually

Appreciate the feedback. I have ordered the sleeve so in a couple of weeks it will have arrived in Hell, Norway. I have taken a couple of new photos of the steering column and I would like know.
1 The black sleeve that is in the photo does not have be removed.
2 The sleeve goes over the black sleeve and between the bearings correct.
At the moment the bearings are loose and if the new sleeve does its job it should reduce the slack.
Does anyone have a before and after photo or know where I can find one.

But on another note you have won a prize for the longest thread title in the history of the internet....

You have to remove that black sleeve and the ignition switch assembly from the column.
The clear plastic bushing fits tightly between the bearing and the steering shaft, installed from the back of the bearing (away from you)

Then the ignition switch assembly is installed back onto the shaft, the black plastic sleeve is installed in front of that (nearer you) and then the trim and steering wheel.

I just did this about a month ago.

Mine has about .40 travel up and down
The plastic insert is ok
Just not good thrust bearingsonewhere?
