Performance Chips - Any suggestions?

I've been looking at various performance chips for my NA and was wondering what other members had experienced.

I cannot find the Wilks chip website so presume they are no longer available.

Flea-bay has two brands listed new for around $35 which would appear to be to good to be true.

Let me know what you have installed, what you think of it and if its still available.

Thanks,

porsche moose,

My car is an 86 n/a, I am going to pull the computer tomorrow to check it has not been messed with already.

How much do you get for the used Wilks Chips?

I had also found the944.com page but the web page it directs you to goes to a GoDaddy page.

Thanks,

John

Removed and opened the ecu to find it has a chip marked as 1267355191, the ecu has obviously been opened before so not sure if it has been upgraded.
The ecu number is as pictured.

The chip is brown and marked Philippines 8511 on the back.

Going by the rest of the po's work I doubt it's anything worth having or original.

It looks like you have a 24 pin DME. I have the same.

@porsche_moose, are your Wilks chips 28-pin only or 24 pin? If they would be plug and play with a 24 pin DME, I would also be interested to know your cost.

I am considering doing an Ostrich II and using Tuner Pro Free to massage the fuel and air.

Wilks makes 24 pin chips, mine might be for sale soon as FRwilks customer service is poor.

How was the actual performance of the mod?

Worth doing?

Given the state of the Wilks Powerprom page and stories of his lack of communication and support, buying from him is also not high on my list.

Rogue Tuning used to do it, but you had to convert to a 28 pin socket on your DME. And, Joshua is doing other things now, anyway.

My main project is to get my 944 water and fume-tight and replace the driver's door with a non rusted unit. Aside from that, i can deal with 140BHP.

Performance on my 85.5 944 was noticeabley better. It ran smoother with no flat spots or stumbles, and I don't know how high it will rev now after the chip, but it will easily and eagerly go to 6500 RPM redline in each gear but 5th, where it used to fall flat about 5000 RPM. Worth the money to me.

On an other note if anyone has a busted ecu lying around mine is missing one of the four aluminum spacers that goes between the board and the base, its also missing the screw.
The PO had a way of working on things.

I know its a long shot but you never know.

Thanks,

yep, this is Russel Berry. I have his chip in my 86 951. Lindsey Racing also sells his chips.

regarding the $30 chip from ebay. at that price hope it helps and does not have maps that will damage your engine.

a good chip that improves performance and driveability and does not cause damage to your engine from flawed maps takes a LOT OF DYNO time and knowledge.

I also have Russel's chip on my 85 911 NA, but 944/951s are his main focus.

Chipping a NA car is, in my opinion, a waste of time and money unless you make coordinated changes to the engine, exhaust, etc.

I have a wilks 3k5 chip in my 1987 944 NA, still uses oxygen sensor (dont ask me why i didnt get the race chip, seemed like a good idea at the time)

honestly made a difference, idle is smoother, power curve is very well done. car seems noticeably faster.

wilks customer service/attitude is poor but you cant argue with his chips.

My 86 NA has a (can't remember the name) hi-flow cat-back exhaust, plus the dubious-benefit large rectangular K&N filter. So, it should breathe a little better than stock.

porsche moose, PM me a price if you want to sell one of your chips.

I presume that the $30 chip is just using a copy of someone else's mappings but maybe not.

Let's face it the chips are cheap to purchase and easy to program if you have the correct kit, just like burning a cd.

Either way for $30 it's worth a look.

I know more than enough about engines to tell if it's harming it.

Also will probably have the car dyno'd with both chips to see if there is any real difference.

I have a Wilks chip in my 1985 with an computer out of a later model car. the chip made the car run much smoother, solved the idle dip when coming to a stop and made the car happier to rev. He was easy to work with and answered all of my questions...very happy!
