So jump right to it. 83 944 N/a no power steering a/c. I'v got a persistent oil leak when the cars running. there's no loss of power or oil smoke so i assume its not getting anywhere it shouldn't besides the ground. passenger side of motor near the front. First thought thanks to the forum was to check the back of the cam tower. dry as a bone. so I got underneath saw it dripping tightened the oil filter and still leaking. as far as I can tell it looks like its coming from the oil cooler housing. there's no cracks that I can find and I don't have an oil in my coolant or coolant in my oil, next step was to re torque the bolts on the housing still leaking no change in flow.. But every time I run the car its pushing oil out on that side and its a fair amount a few drips to a decent sized puddle within minuets. I stopped running the car until I find the source and fix it don't need oil getting all over everything up front. So my question to you is, has anyone had this problem before? can the housing gasket for the oil cooler fail without coolant and oil mixing? or could i be looking at a bigger problem?... And before i forget it is not the sender unit I checked that already and the leak is coming from above . Any help would be awesome i don't want to buy the wrong parts and end up not fixing the problem. Thanks in advance for any insight!

It could the the oil cooler housing gasket or maybe just the OPRV aluminum sealing ring.
The common leak is the rear "O" ring on the lower passenger side balance shaft cover. Replacement is an ordeal. The short term fix is to clean the area carefully, re-torque the cover bolts and then pack some RTV poly sealer around the end of the cover where the seal is. It should be easy to find the leak trail but you could buy a UV oil leak detector kit at an auto parts house and be certain. J_AZ

Ill look for that balance shaft cover just to be certain. I have no intention to tear into anythign around the timing belts unless absolutely necessary haha. The belts look brand new so itd be a shame to have to drop 800 to have them changed. But thanks for the info ill be chacking that and might order the seal with the oil cooler gaskets just in case.

I wish! I'm in Atlantic Canada so unless you've got a heated garage(which I don't) you're stuck waiting for the snow to melt. Though there was still.a fair amount down when I finished. I'm just glad I found the issue and got the leak to stop.

I've been hunting down all the oil leaks on my car, the oil cooler seals are my next target. Any issues to look out for?

Haynes says to put a thin coat of RTV on the oil cooler housing seal depression-works for me.
EDIT--Remember to OIL the BIG 2 green "O" rings on the oil cooler! They will leak if become "rolled" You need the alignment tool for your specific '87 944S. 2 different types. Replace the OPRV 2 "O" rings. Again specific. Some have had to remove the exhaust manifold. Should pressure test the oil cooler for leaks. If the oil cooler housing is really pitted around the big seal-maybe a good time to replace. A good time to change the coolant. I use a regular flush---not the HD SEVERE. Change the heater control valve if you see a white deposit. The drips will ruin the clutch disc. Clean the coolant reservoir. How old are the hoses? I guess it depends.... J_AZ

My advice is not to disassemble the OPRV itself unless the piston does not depress smoothly and easily or you have overpressure issues and are blowing the oil filter gasket. The function of the internal o-ring is merely to hold the hold the OPRV together when assembled at the factory. It doesn't seal anything. Replace the o-ring on the tip, use the alignment tool, oil everything up and reinstall.....
Read all the oil cooler stuff posted here, read Clark's Garage stuff and 944foot2the floor's write-up. Good luck, Jon
