SPEC 1987 944 dedicated track car debuts at SEMA w/ pics!
The folks at SPEC Clutches & Flywheels displayed their most recent project car and we must say it is something to behold! Originally a 951, the turbo engine has since been replaced with an LS2 block producing 550rwhp/498tq. and that's just the beginning of this amazing build. Check out the build list and like us here at Pelican, you'll want to follow the progress of this track monster as it hits the track this spring. Enjoy!

Huh, high pub for a roller with a Chevy block? No thanks.
The 951 is a fabulous car. Swaps are great too. But why here? This is not a Porsche anymore.

You guys don't get it. A High output Turbo build run hard, gets expensive. The LS is bullet proof and actually weighs a few pounds less. Awesome car, Let me know when it goes up for sale!

Still a Porsche. Chev motor can always come out & 4 clyn lunk back in. And maybe it's a better car with the V8. Nothing wrong either way. No reason to be a hater. Any porsche issue spoke here.
current - '88 951 not-an-S, '69 Bettle auto xer, 190hp at rear wheels, + other family members cars past - 86 & 89 951s, 90 924, 88 944.

Interesting and LS V8 is lighter than a 4cyl? I hear they are not much heavier than rotaries as well. That is amazing.

I too would vote to pass. Either drive a Chevy or drive a Porsche. I don't make excuses for my Porsches and just race in the class they are in. I could buy plenty of other cars to get faster lap times if that's all it was about.

Very nice job. Looks like a clean install.
I like the relocation of the throttle body. What did you do for the brakes? (I can't see from the pics) The LSx conversion is the way to go for sure. And anybody that says it's not a Porsche is full of it. The 924 runs an Audi engine and trans (almost all of them). The 944/968 runs an Audi trans. And there is a whole slews VW and Audi part numbers that cross reference all over the entire generation of the 924/944/968. And if Porsche built a 944 engine worth a crap there would be a LOT more 944's racing and the need to put in a real engine would never exist in the first place. You can knock it. But until you drive one you have no idea what you're missing. I've raced a LSx 951 since 2006 and it's been the most reliable, most fun race car that I've ever driven. And I've beat a TON of new GT3's and Cup Cars in the process over the years in the GT classes. That said, I ditched my street based LSx 951 race car (still street legal BTW) and built a full-tilt pro built 951 race car with a LSx engine. Built by none other than the builder of ORCA himself (which BTW was the car he built before ORCA, and then went back to him to take to the level necessary to beat new Cup Cars). Here's mine: TonyG ![]()

Excuses for Porsches? Excuses for anything? None needed. It all is what it is. And it's all good. Talk about it here. Talk about it on the LS forum. Or don't. But this Porsche thread is about this car. No need to hang here if it's not your taste. But there is nothing bad about it. Cars and religion - they're all ok, or you're a hater. What is not to like?

Impressive! I know I wouldn't have the patience to do something like that - I'd probably just go buy a higher-performing car, but it would be interesting to drive something like that and see what it's like.

I like the idea of combinations, good, light power in a great chassis, prototypes do it why not stock Porsches.
Some of you guys are stiff....

So why do all that work and spend all that money just to leave the engine bay the original color? Looks Janky. Sorry.

I think the question is more meant towards what type of boosted brake setup are they using or did they go with a pedal box.
From the looks of it i would say a pedal box with the reservoirs mounted in the car, otherwise maybe they are still figuring that part of the swap out ![]()
