944 Turbo strange problem with tranny

My 944 turbo will not shift into gear when running but will operate normally if i select the gear when the car is off. When the clutch is fully depressed the car does not lunge forward.

There is no transmission noise either. Everything feels and sounds the way it should except that I cannot change gears when it is running.

My first thought is clutch but it has been sitting for some time before this started. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

It almost sounds like a stuck clutch disk from sitting but one of the things you say does not fit: "When the clutch is fully depressed the car does not lunge forward". It'd be worth trying the stuck clutch disk protocol. Put it in 5th with the engine off and hold the clutch down while having someone push the car, see if it pops loose. You could also probably use the parking brake and start the engine.

Otherwise it may be a broken clutch spring.

if you put the trans into 1st gear and then crank the starter, does the car move forward?

Sounds like your clutch is on its way out. I have had the same thing on mine just before I changed it.

You could have air in the clutch cylinder or a bad clutch master or slave cylinder. I have seen them have a slow leak so you don't get full travel and the clutch never fully disengages. If it is a slow leak you can just bleed the system and see if that helps. On of mine has a slow enough leak I just need to add fluid every month or so.

Second the hydraulic problem. If history of the clutch master and slave are unknown, replace both, along with the feed and pressure hose.

Full hydraulic flush WYIT.
