Anyone know the size wrench needed for adjusting timing belt excentrics?
 

I just installed a new timing and balance shaft belts. My only struggle was with adjusting the balance shaft belt sprocket that has the excentric. I don't have any wrenches that would fit and still allow room for tightening the final nut.

Any advice? Although I get everything tightened, I'm going to test with a belt tool and I want to buy a wrench that will fit and be thin enough to allow for movement. I will visit harbor freight but thought I would check with the experts first.

i believe its a 27mm
i got a spare 3/4 wrench and ground the opening to fit the sprocket, and then ground the sides of the "jaws" to about 3/16" thick

that was 10 years ago and the wrench has helped me with 30+ cars' belt jobs, holding up just fine

Got it. If I don't fine a cheap thin wrench, I will make my own as you suggest. Thanks!

I had the same issue adjusting the lower BS sprocket. I tried with adjustable wrenches and every thing was just to tight, awkward to get to, and I could never get enough torque on the bolt without moving the eccentric around and over-tightening the bs belt.

Once I bought the item below, it was really a matter of minutes and I had everything adjusted and torqued down to 35 ft lbs with this thin wrench.

Worth its weight in gold.


Special Tools for 944/968

The Arnworx tool is the way to go. Beware that the oldest tensioners are a different nut size than the tool he typically ships these days. To make sure you get the took you need, your best bet is to measure your nuts (keep it clean, this is a family forum) and let him know which you have when you order.

only once have i come across the "early" early eccentric with the 24mm and didnt have a wrench...
so i found at the parts store a valve spring compressor for a chevy, ground the opening out to 24mm, and flattened the tool, and it worked perfectly!
