Alternator help!!
 

I'm trying to remove my alternator turnbuckle tensioner and belt to put in a new belt and tensioner on my '84 N/A. Apparently I'm supposed to remove or loosen a pivot bolt of some sorts on the Alternator itself, but the only bolt I see is the one on the very bottom of what I think is the alternator? Is that the bolt I'm supposed to loosen or remove?

And then what after that? I can finally remove the bolts holding the turnbuckle in place? And how the hell do I even loosen the tension on with the two wrenches anyways? I couldn't figure it out doing a search on Rennlist, here, any of the technical articles, or my Haynes manual??:confused::confused:

1) Throw away your Haynes manual. Alternatively, put it in the bathroom in case you run out of Sears Catalogs.

2) The turnbuckle actually works between the engine and the AC compressor. Increasing the length of the turnbuckle increases the tension on the belt.

3) The AC compressor pivots on a couple of bolts at the top of the compressor. Tough to see, might be loose enough for the compressor to pivot without loosening them.

4) If you remove the bolt holding the turnbuckle to the compressor, you can then detach the turnbuckle from the block. Take the turnbuckle to a bench vise and use the appropriate size wrench (17 mm, AFAIK) while counterholding the body of the turnbuckle, to loosen the locknut on that side of the turnbuckle. Keep in mind that one end is reverse threaded, so it's the opposite of righty tighty, lefty loosey. The other end is normal thread.

5) Once you get the turnbuckle all loosened up, grease all the threads of both sides of the turnbuckle with antiseize compound. Your future you will thank you for that.

6) Install the new belt, reinstall the turnbuckle (fully compressed), adjust the turnbuckle until you reach the factory specs, tighten the locknuts, and enjoy your working belt.

Can the alternator belt be put on without taking off the PS belt??

no, you cannot change alt belt without removing PS belt. Go and download the Porsche service manual, it's out there on the web, and read that - the Haynes manual has both misleading, and outright wrong information.
