UV gauge lighting, procedures
First I'd like to thank all of those who offered opinions, observations or encouragemnet on my LED gauge lighting project. While I am still exploring alternative approaches to light output attenuation other than the "painters tape" that I used as a test item, I am offering the following pictorial of the procedures
used to date. I hope this will answer any questions any may have about the process. Enjoy the show: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice, thanks!
This makes it much more clear than just talking about it. Which switched circuit did you tap into? I have the same strip in white LED. I also have those clip on pigtails, so I will just have bare wire ends to solder to whichever wires I will use. Should I run extensions to the dimmer rheostat? |

I haven't wired it into the car yet because I'm still deciding on which way to go vs the painters tape. I plan to wire it into the dimmer input 12v because that's nearby and it won't affect the dimmer. I'll solder the male end onto the cable that comes out of the gauge cluster and cut the female wires off of the discarded strip near the strip and attach the female connector to the 12v source. That way the cluster can be plugged together making it easy to disconnect if the gauge cluster is removed in the future. The dimmer won't work on the LED's without a special dimmer unit (available from the manufacturer). I found it unnecessary because I have the light level right where I want it.

Well, today I masked and painted epoxy resin over the blue painters tape, encapsulating it. I figured that if it was right what I wanted, why not make it permanent. After installing the male connector to the cable coming out of the gauge cluster and tapping into two wires that are part of connecter A (the left one of three big connectors on the back of cluster) with the other cable with the female connector, I installed the cluster back in the car. Between the UV light and the meager white lights from the normal installation, It's perfect.

I am starting to understand the painters tape I think - do I understand that the tape is covering the LED - the light is passing through the tape? Won't this inhibit cooling of the LED?

I'm not sure if it affects the led cooling or not. I'm hoping that if anything, the epoxy will have a "heat sink" effect. The tape is placed over LED strip and then painted over with clear epoxy. I guess time will tell. That's the way it is with experimentation, right?
