Help! it was running and now its not:(
 

I recently purchased a 1984 944. It was cheap and the previous owner pointed out some potential issues. It was running when I bought it, started it on fresh gas, but not what I would consider drivable. I trailered the car home and then started in on it. Changed the oil, added coolant and bled the system, tightened up some loose bolts, put in some fresh gas and it started right up. it was running good and stopping good so I took it to get gas. Ran well, warmed up, cooling fans kicked in, all seems good so far. Got home, dropped off the wife and took the kids around the block. As I am coming to a stop sign it starts spuddering and popping, then dies. I get it to start, but it will only idle. When I press the gas pedal it would backfire and die. Towed it back home on the trailer and now it won't start. It turns over just fine, but instead of firing up, it just sputters for about 15 seconds like it is trying to start, small pops. I have tried bypassing the Fuel relay(I can hear the fuel pump running, also there is a slight squealing noise under the hood when it is running), cleaned the contacts on the fuse for the fuel pump, put in a new relay, changed the fuel filter (old one was nasty), I pulled the #1 spark plug and it was sparking.

Previous owner removed the stock airbox and put in an aftermarket air filter, but again, the car was running good for a while, good idle and such.

HELP Please!

I forgot to mention that the tac is bouncing about an 1/8th of an inch when I try and start the car. . I guess that is what is referred to as tac bounce.Also the oil pressure gauge is showing about 2-3 bar when I am cranking the engine.
I really love the engineering that went into this car. Very cool ideas for 1984 and I can't wait to drive it for real!.

Sounds like your fpr(fuel pressure regulator) bit the dust. Cheap part to replace and right atop the fuel rail, 5min fix.

Before I read filly's reply I pulled the distributor cap off, just to see if the rotor was burnt and the set screw fell out. I guess it won't run very well if the set screw for to rotor is not in place.

A big thank you to everyone that contributes to this forum, had it not been for my searches, I would not have know that the rotor even had a set screw. Boy this is a bit different than my 1964 t-Bird!

Now to figure out what the ticking sound is.... This is a fun little car I must say!!!

Fuel injectors are noisy, it's a ticking sound.....

The part that the rotor is screwed to also has a bolt that holds it to the cam. Make sure that is tight as well.
