Porsche Crest Are the early cars REALLY quicker?

Just for fun, who really cares about .5 sec?

I don't know, I've never seen exact figures for the weight difference between the two verions of the 944. All the numbers I've seen have been suspect in one way or another. For example, Pelican themselves actually list the pre-85.5 cars as being heavier, due to the steel vs. aluminium suspension components.

It is important to distinguish between US spec cars and ROW cars. There is a 100 lb and 20 hp difference. So AutoCar and Sports Car World data would not be fair in a comparison since they test ROW cars.

Were the '82 cars US spec or Euro? If Euro, then its not really a valid comparison. Also, how did Automibile get a 1986 944S to test? They did not start making them until '87. Also, notice the widely varying weights for the early cars, they range from 2600-almost 2800 lbs. That's the kind of discrepancy I talked about in my earlier post.

It does make sense that the '83 should be a little faster though, with manual everything and thus the lighter weight.

I should have written this to begin with...
all these tests I gathered from many MANY road tests that I own. I only took tests that dealt with supposedly American-spec cars (the black bumperette is smaller and the bumper has an extra driving light on European cars). In the European magazines (Top Gear, other tests by AutoCar and CAR) the euro-spec 944s did much better in tests. For example, a 1984 Autocar test has the 944 2.5 doing 0-60 in 7.2 with the quarter mile in 15.5!

It's possible that Automobile tested the 944S 16V in October or November 1986, for although it was a model-year 1987 car, they would have definitely been on the road or ready-to-be released by then.

Well, like I've said before, I've driven 3 different 944 series cars: my 83 944, an 86 944, and an 87 924S. The 86 "felt" the slowest of these three, but that may have more to do with engine mileage than weight (40K, 120K, 80K, respectively). I actually walked away from the 924S very impressed, the car was very sharp and responsive. I think it had a tuned exhaust and suspension upgrades, but I forgot to ask the guy.

While not an exhaustive list, here's my own list of road-test results:

Great reference list, Karl... unfortunately I don't really think it applies because those would all be Euro-spec 2.5 944s.
