Stereo and Speakers ?

My back speakers are shot,,,,most likely originals, and the fronts aren't great. From a cursory look, it doesn't appear these are going to be easy to remove. Is that a correct assessment? Also, would a store like Best Buy be able to match the speaker size and bolt pattern?

Regarding the stereo, the red light and CD player don't work. Is there someone who re-does these head units, or should I just pull it and save it in a box and get something of newer technology?

The stock rear location for the speakers on the sides of the rear seat is damned near impossible to get to without removing all the interior trim, and rear window seal. I would go with an aftermarket speaker box across the back for better sopund and less irritation. The front door speakers are easy to get to and take just about any 4x6" speaker and still fit in the stock spots with the stock covers on them.

if you have the 10-speaker option then replacement is not straight forward - the rear speakers have an amplifier built in, and the door speakers are run from an amp under the passenger seat. The head unit just sends out a line level signal.
Lots of options for a component setup to replace the door speakers. The rears can be swapped with a pretty standard 6 1/4' or 6 1/2".
I ended up swapping everything out, but using the existing wiring harness for simplicity. That was 6-7 years ago. Also, I think the coupe is quite a bit different than the cab.
Easiest solution is to go to a place specializing in car stereo and let them replace the whole setup. Technology has advanced a lot in 22 years...

Unless I can't count, I think I have 6 speakers. 2 in the rear, and each door has a small maybe three inch round, and an oval right below the armrest.

Well, got my first estimate to recondition the stereo. 250-350 bucks sight unseen. If that's the norm, I'll do the speakers first, then probably an aftermarket stereo and box up the original. I'm in the wrong business!!!

OK, I just got a second estimate to restore my radio. $275 bucks with a 1 year warranty. Additionally, I pulled my rear speakers. They look like they have an amp in them, which would suggest the wires only send out a linear signal. Since I couldn't find these speakers online, ANYWHERE!, it looks like a whole new stereo system is upcoming. I'll install all new speakers, no problem, then let the guys at best buy put in a new head unit. I just don't want something that has all the pretty colors of the rainbow flashing in my dash. I'll search for a black unit that has AM/FM/CD/USB, and hopefully Blue Tooth. Wanted to sty original, but it looks like that's not in the cards!!

I kept the original radio and added a Bluetooth module and an amplifier hidden under the dash. I even used original connectors so there are no splices. Everything looks original but sounds better and the Bluetooth (Parrot) works great. This may be an option to drive the new rear speakers.

It's now my understanding this car already has an amplifier somewhere. I didn't see it under the passenger seat, so maybe it's behind the head unit. I just talked to a car stereo tech, and he advised me of a company in Roseville that specializes in P-car stereos. I'll look these guys up B4 I do anything drastic. Maybe, just maybe, I gave up prematurely. But thanx for the info, Tom. It's nice to have options

my 951 DE/street project car came without a radio.

after driving to a couple DEs over 2 hrs away, decided I would like some tunes.

so rather than install a radio, got this speaker I can plug in my ipod. then remove for track time.

and pulled the front door speakers.

Good info on the stereo FAQ. Make sure to remind whoever is installing to hookup the power antenna or remote turn-on lead so you have full reception. A lot of installers don't connect it because they don't see a power antenna, or know there's a factory booster for reception.

Blaupunkt probably has the most factory looking headunits if you want to avoid all of the flash.
