Interesting Mods from PO

Just want to share this. Regarding my AC problem lately, I looked closely and found that the AC system was totally modified, resulting in lot of other modifications.

The alternator was move to the bottom of my car (like those who have AC delete bracket), and AC compressor is on top of it (opposite to original). The AC compressor bracket was custom built, and my AC compressor and alternator are using 2 separate belts. 2 big V-belt crank pulleys were custom built and added. Pls see the picture below.

As you can see in picture above, the power steering crank pulley was custom built and has a lot bigger diameter compare to the original one. And because there is additional crank pulley, the power steering pump pulley was custom built to stick out one step in front. Pls see the picture below.

I have late alternator (115A) with 6 rib pulley on my car, but my crank pulley has 5 rib, but the belt is 4PK. That is not how it should be!

My AC compressor is aftermarket and using V-belt. It was installed without any tensioner rod. It works, but as soon as the belt squeal, I have to throw the belt away.

All pulleys were very well machined. I have worked on this car for 1.5 years trying to find oil leaks and restore everything back original, but I didn’t even notice that all these pulleys are not original at all. The only thing I know is the AC compressor and bracket were not original.

Surprisingly they all work well. I’m wondering why PO did all these mods?? If a bad AC compressor was the starting point of all these mods, buying a new compressor would be a lot cheaper than all these custom built pulleys and bracket. So why? Or 1982 RHD 944 was originally built like this. Anyone seen something like this before?

Although they work well, I’m restore everything back to original because;
  • Additional crank pulleys are heavy and they stick out too close to radiator fan.
  • AC compressor is dying and it’s a good time to convert back to original.
  • Power steering pump pulley is too close to radiator hose.

PS. Anyone have a power steering pump pulley (part # 944 347 437 03) and can ship it to CA 91204, please let me know. Posted in classified section also, WTB: Power Steering Pump Pulley (944 347 437 03)

Thanks!

Was power steering a factory option in your car? Could be an early design for alternate belt setup, manual steering was standard for 82/83 cars. Or maybe a PO added power steering and used parts from other 944 model years, and this is what ended up working.

Power steering was added by PO. I can tell because power steering reservoir was bolted to the engine bay.
