944 turbo Starting issues....

So,
I have a 1987 944 turbo,
I haven't drove the car in about a week, I had today off so last night I decided to drive it to the bar. It started fine and ran great. A few happy hours later I come back to the car and turn the key only to be greeted with a "clack" from the starter.... so I said hey the starter is almost 30 yrs old its time to replace it, no big deal. I bumped started the car and she ran like a champ all the way home. So today I put a brand new starter on, reconnected the battery and wouldn't you know it I get the same damn "clack" from the starter.... And my radio flashes all weird like there's a short. So I'm guessing it's a wiring or bad ground issue...
I SUCK at diagnosing wiring/shorts/ voltage problems.
HELP ME!!!!!

Cheers!

Very possible you have a bad ignition switch or the ground wire lug on the top of the bell housing. Also check your battery connections, if you haven't already.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

What's the ground wire lug? What does it look like and where can I find exactly ?

UPDATE:
I had the car hooked up to a running cars battery, I turned the ignition key, and it sounded as if the starter was extending to the flywheel, but not turning. then I grabbed an insulated screwdriver and jumped the prongs and the starter spun and sounded like it was spinning but wasn't extended, obviously because the engine didn't turn over and the starter motor sounded unrestricted and high pitched.

I'm so stumped as to what could be going on.....

Also, in trying to find the bell housing ground, we found the firewall ground, as well as two electrical connectors wrapped in electrical tape, and upon removing the electrical tape we found that they were just disintegrated. And looked crappy all together. I'm not sure what these connectors do and not even sure if this is part of my problem but this is what they look like:

They are the speed and reference sensors. Pelican sells them (Facet- about 35$ a piece, and Porsche or Bosch- $85? A piece). Got my Facet (plastic sensor) on an auction site for about $65 for both).
Try and start the car, watch the tach. If it bounces, the sensors are getting the signal from and to the DME and its relay. But, it looks like you definetly need to replace those sensors because they probally will give you troubles in the future. Have someone shake those sensors while you try and start the car, and also make sure the 2 ground wires just south of the sensor connection are clean and secure.

Just ordered both!! Thanks Kidd!!
Pin-pointed the issue last night, it turned out to be a bad positive battery cable. It's always something simple!

Your welcome. I meant to mention the starter wire on the positive battery, but glad that you found your problem.

I've had the bad battery cable problem...it can have very strange, inconsistent symptoms. In my case I just needed to thoroughly clean the connections.
