Handbrake light question......

I recently discovered that I have a "handbrake" light in my cluster (duh!!).

This is the only thing on my car that doesn't work right now and I HAVE to get it working...I'm soooo picky!

Here is the deal - I was told that the handbrake has a sensor/button that works the light. I went out and looked at the handbrake and found a lil' green button, surrounded by a spring. It appears the button goes into a hole in the handle of the handbrake. It doesn't appear that the handle makes contact (but it must). The button is stiff (spring has a bit o' rust on it), but will move if forced. I also found a black wire next to the button that contains two other wires inside it. At the end of the green button is a white plastic piece that has two prongs coming off it, I take it that the two wires from the black wire hook up to these prongs?? Am I right in assuming this? If not, how do I get that light in my cluster working?

the two prong switch is the correct part. The wire connects to one of the prongs, and the switch body itself acts as ground, completing the circut.

the green button you mention is probably a rigged up job.

AFJ, what does the handbrake look like normally? (well, I know what the handbrake looks like, but what about the system that makes the light go on in the cluster?). What kind of system was originally used to make this light come on? You said mine was most likely rigged-up, but it sure looks "professional". I can't see the S having any different hook-up.

Should there be a button that hits the handbrake? On my car, the button, spring, white plastic piece and prongs are all one part that sits on the floor just under the handbrake.

By chance, would you know which prong I would hook the wire(s) to? Or does it matter? I couldn't find anything about this in the shop manuals.

Other prong will work.

The switch should be silver with a black button - it should screw to the handbrake bracket frame. The switch should clearly have a VW/Audi logo on it (actually one of the few parts that does)

If I can find a picture of one, I will upload it in a bit.

Cool - thanks!!

My button has no markings what so ever. It is screwed into he handbrake bracket frame though.

A pic would help tons!!!
