idle question

Is the DME the only means that an early '44 has to regulate idle after the warm up enrichment? When I turn my headlights on, the idle doesn't speed up any more, and when the fans come on, it pulls the motor down, more so than it used to. I had a bad injector, but I replaced that. any ideas?

900 +/- 20. I'm afeared I have a burnt valve, cuz the miss hasn't gone away.

Check your intake boot for leaks. Sounds exactly like what happened to me.

I replaced every darn thing under the hood, then one day I removed the intake boot and found that it had cracks on the underside. This would mess the AFM up and cause a miss.

After 20 or so years they dry up and crack, espically since its between the stationary air filter box, and the engine.

The early cars do not have any form of active idle control other than a solenoid mounted at the rear of the air box that opens when the A/C is on.

What you are seeing is the alternator loading down as more current is being drawn by the electircal system. This loading in commonly reffered to as "Counter Electro-Motive Force," or CEMF, and is "felt" by the prime mover (in this case the engine) as an additional mechanical load.
