H4 LED Bulbs?
Hello Good People,
I upgraded the wire harness and headlights to an H4 setup a few years ago. I recently heard about H4 LED Bulbs and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them that would be worth sharing. T.I.A.

Been done but IMO $400 a pair is a little too high but prices should come down in the next few years.
Here you go: RL LED H4 Headlights

$400 a pair sounds more like a HID setup instead of LED bulbs!
Hmmm...I cannot get the link you provided to work.

+1 on the GE nighthawk lights. Great solution that will outlast the car and provides light as good as HID without the annoying glare for other drivers or the extreme load on the electrical system. They are also lighter helpng those with cars that are trying be svelt.

Thanks for the link!
Those GE nighthawk lights look great, however the price tag at this moment doesn’t. The search continues...

I was thinking about changing to those same headlights...
did you buy the genuine JW SPeaker items or the Ebay versions? |

You don't need an entirely new headlight. There are H4-compatible LEDs.

the lensing is better on the ones he has installed in the last picture.
H4 is OK, E-code is better, but the LED with the sharp cutoff is even better. |

Has anyone tried the newest H4 LED bulbs that are plug and play? I assume they will work well on the standard reflectors and they do seem to be in the $50 a pair price range now. I have tried HID and they are OK, but have a lot of RFI in the electrical system.
I am not interested in a $1000 solution here. I have done a bit of searching on the site here and I am a bit surprised that I don't fine much on the newest generation of H4 Led bulbs.

I just tried those 2 weeks ago - total garbage.
They only put out a few spots of light rather than a full 360 due to the LED chip orientation vs. the reflector. I put my years-old Halogen bulbs back in within about 30 minutes, and returned the LEDs. |

the lens of a headlight is a very high tech piece of equipment. it is designed to work with a specific bulb. while swapping out to a different bulb may "seem" like it's better, it may in fact be worse. more light is not necessarily good. the color of the light is just as important as the brightness. a lens refracts light, which can easily be adversely affected by installing the wrong bulb. for example, blue is bad. the human eye loses its ability to see color at night, and this is exacerbated in blue light. this is particularly important in peripheral vision.
i see a lot of guys installing brighter bulbs, especially behind old and/or dirty lenses, but in reality just ending up with more glare than anything else. you are much better off making sure the insides as well as the outsides of the lenses are clean, free of fogging, scratches, and hazing. |

the light output of my Subaru must have doubled after i gave the plastic lenses a decent polish. they weren't severely yellow or scratched or anything, just a light haze, but holy cow they are bright now. |

yup - it's not something most people notice either, or would think of if they did. the knee jerk reaction is to replace the bulb. unfortunately that is almost never the right thing or best thing to do.
