Wheel Spacers on Rear of 1986 Turbo
Hello,
Will 21mm spacers be too much or too little on the rear of a stock 1986 turbo? Would 21mm + 6mm be too much and or too dangerous with longer studs? I need to know this so I can choose proper studs (66 or 72mm). Where do you source steel studs for extra strength? Whenever I search, I see the stock black ones and not sure if these are as strong as they could be. Are there any better alternatives to Porsche OEM, such as ARP? I have two genuine Porsche 21mm spacers on hand and have decided to go with longer studs to install them in the rear (I know some are cautious about certain spacers but the 21mm spacer came stock in early 944s). Thanks for the help. |

Or maybe an adapter like this is better?

I don't like using the bolt-on adapters due to the weight and extra set of lug-nuts that can't be checked easily. Also not allowable with some of the track-groups I run with. I prefer the factory 21mm spacers with longer-studs as it allows me to go from street wheels+spacers to track-wheels without spacers quickly and easily.
I used the factory 21mm spacer from early-944 with 72mm studs from... Troutman I believe. Easy way to swap studs is to remove the parking-brake cable. Then pound out the old studs through the hole in the trailing-arm that's used by the parking-brake cable. Then install the new 72mm studs through that hole from the back side (remember that Operation board-game?). Pull out the new studs with an open-ended lug-nut and zap with impact-wrench. Here's my 16x10" HRE wheels with 245/45-16 tyres before and after the 21mm spacer install. ![]() |

Thanks mytrplseven. Looks like you have an adapter. Sorry to those who notice I have a similar thread in another forum, but I am still wondering if anybody with experience spacing out the rear of an early offset turbo, 1986, can chime in about how much spacing to use with stock wheels.
I am thinking about 30 or 32 mm adapters, just wondering if everything will fit. 21 just might not be enough. edit: just saw your post danno, that is helpful. I wonder where you sourced the studs? Last edited by 944tothefloor; 02-28-2016 at 07:25 PM.. |

I got the 66mm studs # 911.331.671.00 from Troutman back in 2001 or so. I think they closed down shop in 2005. You can probably get these from Pelican or Paragon. Should call them because they don't list everything online.
The 21mm spacers were about as far out as I could go on my 16x10" wheels with 245/45-16 tyres. These placed most of the extra width on the inside, so outer edge is in similar position as stock 16x8" wheels. Even then, I had to roll and trim the fender-lip a little. |
