idler pulley
There was racket up front so I pulled the belt cover and found this. I wonder what caused it?

Never been replaced.... How in the hell did it not tear the belt up? I had one fly apart causing it to shred the balance belt and cause timing belt to come off.... Bent 7 out of 8 valves as I was turning some RPM's when it happened.

Lucky dog! Glad you found it before it could cost you gobs of money. This is why I replace them with each wp change.

Lucky I was, the only damage seems to be the corner of the balance belt was worn down. I guess I need to fish out the other balls bearings and replace both belts.

Replace the idlers and the tensioner roller for the balance belt. Anything with those sealed bearings will not last as long as people think. You got lucky.
I also had the smooth idler that runs on the back of the timing belt lock up. Didn't make a noise at all. Just locked up. Over the course of a few months, it slowly rubbed the timing belt to where it was so thin it snapped. Never made a peep. My wife was driving it when it snapped. We coasted to a stop on the side of the road. I knew what had happened..... Only bent 5 valves that time. I took the time to port and polish the intake and exhaust runners that time. All new guides too. |

This one is the timing belt idler on the 87S motor with the spring tensioner. It was wedged in between the upper cover and the balance belt.
The belts and wp are supposed to be relatively fresh miles wise, under 30k, maybe 6 years old. I guess I should count myself extremely lucky. |

I too replace all idler pulleys and tensioners with each belt change. It's only an extra $150 (or less) but good piece of mind.

yep, over the winter I did a 'fully monrty' on the 87 944S, incl cam chain pads. and I mean everything possible to replace.
no worries now for a while. hmm... now that I think about it probably time to re-tension.

Mystery, I tried to find the rest of the ball bearings using a magnet through the lower cover inspection hole and didn't find any of them. Either they escaped or they are lodged elsewhere above.

They probably fell out. The belt covers are better for keeping small items out as opposed to holding them in.
