speed/reference sensor, shim and setting gap

Getting back to this project to finish installing new speed and reference sensors and a new bracket since the old one cracked. I hear that there may be a figure-8 shim, but there was not when I took things apart. I'm trying to understand where that it supposed to be, and if it is related to the notion of setting a 0.8mm gap between the sensor and the bracket. As I understand it, I glue a 0.8mm washer to the underside of the old sensor. I install the bracket, then the old sensor with the shim on it and use this to final tighten the bracket, then remove the old sensor and install the two new sensors and then begin the rebuild steps?

Yep. 0.8mm it is .. Speed and Reference Sensors - Checking, Replacement, and Adjustment

Even easier: glue a piece of cardboard that is 0.8 mm thick to the new sensor, then adjust the bracket. You will not have to remove the sensor since the cardboard will disintegrate over time.

See my IM on this matter.

Were there different set ups for the bracket or is Clark's wrong? On mine the pivot bolt is left side (driver's) and locking bolt (slotted) is right. Opposite of labels on Clarks write up.
Also I hope it is possible to reinstall the bracket with both the reference sensor's protective sleeve installed (I can't get it out) and the alignment dowel installed in bracket (mine was missing).
Is there enough wiggle room to both put the sleeve down into the bell housing while putting the dowel into the block hole? Hmmm
