Elec Prob. Brake Wear-sensors
 

When I bought my '86 951 last year, I was told that the idiot light on the dash telling you the brakepads are getting low, was stuck "on" I immedialtly replaced the pads, rotors and sensors since they were pretty low. Just like I was told, the light stayed on. I took it to a garage to have this looked at and they told me both the front and rear pads and sensors were fine. Where would the "more common" trouble spots be? Is this something the average mechanic (myself) and a volt meter http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/vuur.gif be able to detect? My fear is that the bulb is going to burn itself out and then I will really be screwed.

the connector between the sensor and the wiring harness might be grunged up - disconnect the sensors one by one and see if the light goes out.

if the light burns out, no big deal - the instrument cluster comes out with 7 or 8 screws.

I disconnected every sensor on mine and the damn light still stayed on! I finally just removed the bulb, too much troubleshooting work for something that I check on a regular basis anyway.

To get the light to go out, you have to short the two sensor wires together. On mine, I just cut the plugs of the old busted sensors, shorted the two wires close to the plug end, sealded it up and re-connected the plug.
