Where is my balance shaft located?

Reason I ask..when I look through the hole on my timing cover..I notice a gear that doesn't have any belt on it. Well recently my car started vibrating horrible...which I thought was a bad motor mount. Wondering if what I'm seeing is the balance shaft pulley, and since there isn't a belt..what I should do? I have 2 new turbo mounts ready for installation

it is pretty easy to take the front plastic cover off to check the belts, that would allow you to see everything better.

Check out here for a nice pic of it.

Yikes..I need a book. Well hopefully my mechanic friend will have the tools, and let me borrow them. If my Balance shaft belt busted, then I don't see why the timing belt is gettin there as well. It was all last changed with an OE water pump @ 45K It now has 93K. Thinkin I should bite the bullet and buy an updated pump/belt/pulley kit. Hmm..time to search for help

47 k miles is not too bad. Pushing it, but not too bad.

Replace them both right now! Don't worry about having a tension setting gauge. Just replace them NOW.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Looks like whats gonna happen. It looks fairly straight forward. I've done the timing belts on my Rabbit alot.. so tension it to the 90 degree twist. Will the car be out of time, or can I line up marks? Should I buy all of the pulleys as well? Should I even worry anout the water pump..or just do the belts? I have 3 weeks of Christmas vacation in a cold garage. Looks like I have my hands full...

Definately buy the rollers, I would recommend the pump as well. I think the water pumps last around 100k miles and you are right on it. You are supposed to change the belts at 30k so that should be done asap.
