smog test problems

My 86 NA failed twice already the damm smog test.
allowable levels (max) is 946 on the NO part.
the first time i recorded 1104 and the second time was 1309, both well above the maximum allowed.
How can I lower my levels of NO without spending much $$$.
I am required to go through a "smog test only" facility they cannot do repairs or reccomend options!
Can anybody help????
thanks:confused:

where would I cheaply purchase this O2 sensor without driving all the way out to el Segundo to Pelican? I need to have this fixed by next week or I have a registration penalty

Try your closest Pep Boys or Krangen auto parts. They are in the phone book.

Check the sensor they give you against Wilk's description to insure you get the correct one.

NO out of site

Last year I chased the NO problem for 2 months and a $1000.00.
Spent 6 hours on Derecks dyno, changed every sensor, setting, AFM and piping. All we found was the engine ran the same. Also added 4 wire O2 kit. Went to shop who alowed me to use his Gas analyzer. Proved Cat was OK. After getting a peek at the SMOG testers bible I found that for our cars < 3.0 they are to test in second gear if the engine was above 1500 RPM. Mine was at @ 1502, this is too low for our cars, most will fail NO. Added air to rear tires new RPM was 1495 this ment they had to use 1st gear. Car passed with fling colors. By the way the final smog check was at a shop that was owned by an Ex por mech. He already new of this problem (Why didn't dereck?). The first question he asked was what are my rear air pressures at. (Sorry for the spelling errors).

Just my .02

Yes exhaust leaks will cause to fail. It will shown excessive entrance of regular O2 into the system.

How does your J-boot look? Remove it and check for cracks on the bottom. It will cause serious emissons issues if it has ANY holes in it.

Now check for leaks in the intake runner selas. Can of carb cleaner is a good test. It will bubble aorund the holes.

I failed worse then you. But it was a simple J-boot leak that was messing up the AFM. Best of luck, you'll find it!
