1985.5(manual) engine removal (wiring harness problem)

I'm using Clark steps but have encountered the following problems:

How in the world do I push the DME PLUGS (2X OF THEM) through that FILLED hole inside of the Firewall into the engine compartment ! That seems flipping impossible without cutting a bunch of wires.

There are "TWO"DME plugs which on this model are in the driver compartment near the left side of the steering column INSIDE THE CAR. One of the plugs is connected to the main branch of the wire bundle. The other one seems more possible but still there is no space... NONE !

Do both plugs have to go through the fire wall into the engine compartment ? That seems to be what Clark is saying although it's not clear because Clark seems to indicate there's only one plug but there are TWO !

Is there any other possible way ?

Do I remove the rubber gasket that is embedded in the firewall ? It has three separate holes in it for three separate wire bundles ? One goes the Radiator, One goes to the Battery and the other one I cant remember. But these are separate holes within the rubber gasket ? It seems like the gasket is going to have to come out but still I wonder if there is enough room to get the ONE DME plug through the hole much less two?

I've worked on all types of cars this is my first GERMAN CAR and everything was going great until I hit the wiring harness.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Yep. Clarks Garage is correct. I have done it literally hundreds of times.

Note: you have an early 85 944, if the DME is on the steering column.

Remove the rubber gasket towards the engine compartment.

Then push the smallest plug through the hole, then the larger one, then finally, the largest one.

I did not push the plug through the hole. I just unplugged everything. Thanks for the reply.
