clutch/trans problem?
not sure if i have more problems that just having the clutch give out..
can get car in gear, put in clutch, gear into first, and let out clutch, but only hear the sound of something turning and car goes nowhere, '87 924S anyone know how to further diagnose? could it be a broken bearing? can't imagine that the whole trans is shot. thanks, pnut |
WOW, does not sound like a clutch. Usually even when borken they still grab a little.
I would start by opening the trans coupler inspection cover on the transmission. Chack to make sure the torque tube to transmission input shaft connection is still in place. It has large allen head bolts. I had on get loose once and slip off. You can now also check with the car on jackstands, and running in first if the input shaft is spinning. If it is then you could suspect the ring and pinion. If not then go after the clutch. The clutch also has an inspection cover. It's a rubber plug in the bottom of the bellhousing. Shine a light up there and check it out. |
Sounds like the clutch disk decoupled fro the hub - the disk is spinning but the hub isn't - kind of like being in Neutral.

I just read on an earlier post that the pinion would make a loud rumbling noise when it's on it's way out. I've been having a loud rumble for a while and was in the process of checking and replacing the c.v. joints (only changed the passenger side so far). Could this noise be the pinion instead? Also, sometimes when I've been driving for a long time and park the car, after I turn the car off, I hear a long hum coming from the rear, like if you hit a tuning fork (best way to describe it). Could this be related?

Check to see if the bolts came loose on your CV joints.

clutch or transmission?
I have a problem and I don't know if its the clutch or the transmission. When I put into any gear and start to let off the clutch it make a loud winding noise, does not move! This occurred yesterday, without any warning signs. I have a 1986 944 5-speed manual transmission. Will appreciate anyone input!

Pnut: Look in the bell housing (pull your starter off) hunks of rubber - your clutch is shot. If you can get your fingers up there and spin the clutch disk - your clutch is shot.
To me, it still sounds like your clutch disk broke free of the hub. Been getting any clanking as you shift? Otherwise, time to check CVs and transmission. Quick check for Pinion damage - drain the fluid - As the fluid is draining, filter it through something. Chunks: bad thing. Fluid that looks like that glitter body spray: bad; small amount of metallic dust: Normal. R&P will also clunk in proportion to engine speed - makes a hell of a racket. drako57: Your clutch definately sounds shot Follow the steps above to check your clutch AFJuvat |
