From Junkyard to show car

Back in August (2013) I purchased a 1987 Porsche 944S from the junkyard for $820.

Upon diagnosis I deemed that it has a blown head gasket. The body is straight and only has 1 tiny ding on the whole car! It will need new brakes and a few misc interior items but overall the car is in great shape for being where it was.

I decided to make this thread to document my journey on restoring this car well enough to be able to enter it in a car show (without being embarrassed).

I will post pictures and prices of most everything I do on the car. This is all being done on my self-supporting college budget and little mechanical knowledge.

I am very excited about this project and can't wait to see the end result!

Brings back memories, good and bad!

Good luck on your project, and just don't keep track of the costs - you'll enjoy it a whole lot more!

I did not buy mine from a junk yard but it was going to go there if I didn't. It had broken TB and a spare head, rear window was separated, seats torn, bad tires, bad paint, ETC. It has taken me about 3 years off and on and running a house hold to get it where I am very proud of my 944. I paid I think around $500. But it has been so much fun and I will never sell, even though I have offers all the time. Good luck and yes by all means pictures and context for all to see.

I'm not too concerned about the cost. I see it as something I love to do and an educational process as well so cost doesn't really phase me.

Gaw - Luckily I'm taking an automotive painting class this semester so I'm going to be painting it myself which will save a ton of money.

Very Cool

Very cool! Very resourceful, young man! Just a note! I've been watching Craigslist here in Michigan and a few of the yards here, won't sell you a whole car. They figure the car is worth more in parts over the long haul. Funny, I was just at a U-Pull yard and there was a sharp Lexus, probably 10 years old, looked good to me, however makes you wonder what's really up with it!

Good on ya. Learning new skills and having a "lab project" to-boot is a win-win situation. The good thing is you get to keep the project.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Fellow 944 friends, I think I've finally made a decision to revamp this dream and actually move forward on her after about 3 years of school, financial troubles, and hardships.

I was very close to selling her/parting her out as you might have seen in another recent thread I posted. You guys helped motivate me and some of you are actually helping me get her road worthy again.

I now feel the same joy and excitement I felt when I first got her and couldn't be more excited to move forward on this project. There really is no car like a 944 and to have an 'S' model now is even more special for me.

I'm not going to take another 3 years on this so I will be continually updating this so feel free to join me on this journey. I appreciate all the support and insight from you all.

In my opinion, all of these cars are worth saving if you intend to keep it and drive. As far as being an "investment", forget it. Maybe someday they'll be worth more than you "paid" but who cares if you save it and keep it going for the next generation of 944 lovers.
