Vibration in gearstick

Hi,

For a couple of months now i got a nasty vibration in the stick at very low rpm (up to 1250rpm) and again at 3000rpm and then under full power again at around 6000 to 6500 rpm. It seems the stick itself is a bit loose so that must be causing the vibrating sound. Now, that's not a real big deal, but the vibrating must come from somewhere and i bet my engine is a bit shaky. Could it be a slipped balancebelt or something. And: how can i check if it slipped or hopped a few teeth?

Any tips are welcome, maybe it isn't the balance belt, but i would really like to check!

Thanks!

You either have a bad motor mount, which can be detected by measuring the mount underneath the car.

Or you have a balance belt that has slipped. If thats the case, you may also be overdue for a timing belt. This is dangerous.

Yep, i know, i had my belts checked about 7k miles ago and my mech said everything looked fine, no real wear on either belts or rollers. I could go on for quite a while with this set. I think they need a change in about another 5k miles now... but it might be wise to have good look at it when it's in the shop tuesday. But: is there a way to check a slipped balance belt?

Yea, when you get the engine to TDC on #1 all of the marks should line up.

the top balance shaft gear will be straight up and aligned with the mark on the housing, and the bottom will be almost straight down, and matching it's mark.

The funny part is that I have now seen several belt jobs, both from shops and at home where the timing belt rollers were installed backwards. Like top on bottom, this looks correctly aligned, but in fact is not .

For some reason the cb-shaft pullies are universal. Here's a diagram of the correct alignment.

Vibration? How is your clutch, and or Fluid in the Brake/Clutch Reservoire? Motor Mount sounds like an added problem. If you have noticed a slight decrease in performance, it is definately your clutch.

Clutch has only about 3k miles on the clock, should be no problem. Fluids are ok as well. 6 months ago i had a new clutch and drivetube installed by a professional. The old drivetube was worn out and had demolished bits of the old clutch. So everything had to go out and be replaced. After that the old hard vibrations and sounds were gone. Now i have a light vibration that i can barely feel in the stick, but the stick seems to be a bit loose so it starts resonating at some revs. I know this is 'just' a matter of fixing something along the stick to get it tight again (no clue what it might be), but there IS a vibration at low, medium and high revs. That tells me something isn't going smooth, so:
- slipped balance belt
- motor mounts
- clutch/drivetube related
- gearbox

I know my motor mounts are the old ones, but they were checked and were still fine. Clutch/drivetube has been replaced already, unless something went wrong with installation. Leaves me with a slipped balance belt... And for the gearbox: i have no clue how the state of it is, but it shifts into all gear without any problems, so i really can't think of something with the tranny. Maybe the new oil i put in? I got it from a Porsche dealer, so i assume that should be ok.

I recently replaced the clutch in my na944,and while I was under
there,I gave the drive shaft a spin, just to make sure that it was spinning
freely. It seemed to be a little warped. No big deal, right? About a week or two later, I was talking to a friend who drives a 5.0 stang. Among other things, he mentioned that he was getting a nasty vibration that
he thought was coming from his drive shaft being warped.
Now that I know this, I cant help but notice this nasty vibration occuring
between 3000 to 3800 rpm, and it was there for some time.
Im a musician, and a luthier by trade. It makes to much sence--
resonence and sympathetic vibrations,etc.
Anyway, I dont know what damage this will cause to my engine or trans
in the future, but I try to stay away from that frequency.

Yeah, i had that problem with my old shaft as well, it's fixed now. My mech told me a part in the stick to box connection was worn out and was picking up all vibrations from the car. It didn't feel like a motormount or shaft, it's way too weak, he told me..
So, let's hope a 10$ replacement does the trick
