Like the post. I am replacing all belts/seals/pulleys. FINALLY!! Anyways..I now have everything removed and in the middle of cleaning it all. The crank seal def. needs replaced..but I'm going to do them all. I bought the kit, what goes where (esspecially the O-rings?) And it cam with 3 thin plastic washers..usefull? I don't kno if I'm to pry them out or what?

You need to be working with the workshop manual on this.
If you heven't got at least the manual and the "Parts and Technical Information" book STOP NOW before you make a mistake. When replacing the crank seal also replace the oil pump drive the seal runs on and the o-ring..otherwise it will leak again. Also replace the balance shaft seal sleeves or the seals will leak again. NO book = no working on the car till you get one.

Ditto on the oil pump drive gear. I thought I could get away with leaving it in, but it was too grooved from the previous seal, and now I have to go back in and replace the seal again.
Ask around for the service manuals, they are lurking in PDF format, on FTP sites around the internet.

I have a FSM. It doesn't really show much though. It shows the order of pieces, and included are a few seals, but I have the following seals and don't know where they go :
1- small and skinny O-ring 2- large and skinny O-rings 1- large and thick O-ring 3- small and thin transparent washers 1- very small seal (brown, 3/8" inch high, 1/4" wisde, 1/4" hole in middle) And of course the hard rubber seals with the deminsions on them (I can cross reference these) According the the FSM, there are some O-ring replacements after you remove crank/balance covers. I can't find any real procedure on the web except Clark's and ScottR showing Eduardo how to do it. Anyways..some light shedding please? Thanx, Greyson

Which kit did you get? It sounds like you may have all of the o-rings for doing the rear balance shaft seals as well as the front seals.

Tell ya what, do you have a digital camera? If while you taking it apart snap some pictures of the seals that you have questions on.
Once you get it open it will be pretty straight forward.

1- small and skinny O-ring-slides on to crankshaft, behind the washer, behind timing gear, etc.
2- large and skinny O-rings-bearing caps for balance shafts 1- large and thick O-ring-camhousing or camcarrier, requires removing cambolt and gear 3- small and thin transparent washers-one for camshaft, others for balance shafts 1- very small seal (brown, 3/8" inch high, 1/4" wisde, 1/4" hole in middle) - again for the camshaft front carrier, requires removing cambolt and gear, sandwhiches between cambox and front carrier) |

Front main seal has cut a groove into the oil pump gear. Or the upper balance shaft seal is leaking down and it looks like the main is leaking. You will see it when you get all of the covers off.
Watch that CAM bolt it strips easy. If you strip it you will have to cut it off and get a new one from the dealer. Although I think that Overkill found a replacement type bolt when he did his head from a hardware store.

My cam isn't leaking. It looks like an odd setup..I may just leave it alone. since it's an 85.5, I have to remove that whole upper balance shaft cover too right? WHat do I use to reseal it all?

Ditto on Scott R's ditto to Britwrench's comment on the oil pump drive sleeve...I wasn't aware of that when I rebuilt my engine...Now I see a leak developing and I know that is the culprit...Oh well, live and learn...
