Water Leakage From A/C Evaporator?

I have a 1987 944 Turbo. I finally got my A/C updated with a new compressor and condenser. It's nice to have cool air again. My problem is that after running with the A/C on for a while today, water began shooting out of the vents, and dripping from below the passenger side dash. I looked under the dash, and the entire plastic box in the center of the dash (I assume the evap) has massive amounts of condensation dripping everywhere. When I make a left turn, water pours out from the passenger side under the dash.

Is there some kind of drain hose that I could check and where would I find it? Is there a larger issue with the evaporator? I need to get this straightened out right away, as I'm afraid that my DME or KLR will get fried if too much water drips out.

There is a drain hose that comes up above the torque tube and in bellhousing you can use compressed air to form underneath to blow it out if you have the proper adapter for your airline

Thanks - I'll look for it. I hope that it's that simple!

Another problem is the drain hose rubber breaks down and becomes gooey or clogged and won't drain the evaporator housing.

To replace, order a spare (about $5-8), unbolt and slide the console back to expose the drain hose. It is immediately to the rear of the radio. You may find it helpful to remove the radio and storage pocket to gain access.

Thank you - that is very helpful. I'll check it out and replace it.

A tip that's useful is when you pull the drain hose off that's behind the radio, have a shop vac ready. I sucked out about a gallon of water from the evaporator. I used shop air to blow the debris out of the drain line, put it back on, and I'm good to go.

You can also clean it from underneath by using a piece of wire. I made a tool out of garage door type cable. Put heat shrink or tape a turn or two on each end to keep from fraying. Insert in drain and with turning motion push the cable into the drain tube. This will break up the offending clog and the water will flush out the debris . This works great for the sunroof drains too. This method eliminates the danger of blowing off a clogged line in an inaccessible location.

Yep. I use weed trimmer line to clean out the long drains for the run roof. Soft enough not to poke a hole. Flexible and strong enough to push down the hole and follow the path of the drain tube. Works like a charm.

you don't want to disconnect that line before draining it or you will end up with a couple of quarts in the footwell!

Wow, love the string trimmer idea, it's brilliant. I can retire my trusty cable

Be sure to round the end so there aren't any sharp edges.
