1.Is it just a 944 with a dead engine? 2.Or do ALL the conversion parts come with? 3.. Has the V8 been installed and it just need completing? If 1, the car is worth £500ish. 1,2 or 3, you will need a garage to complete the job, you shouldn't think of attempting to do so in you backyard with winter coming along.

It can be both motivating to keep (as you can visualize your goal) and discouraging to see it wait (trust me I know on that one). Knowing what you have is worth the difference. If you were to start over when everything is perfect (which it never is), is this where you want to start from?

i have done 4 SBC conversions two are cars i own . i have also done a number of the LS conversions the SBC conversion is pretty simple and very low cost . the one question i get from people asking me about my 948's is if the 8V trans can handle the power of the SBC and it's yes we all know the 951 trans is a better one but if your not into roasting the tires off the car then the stock 8V trans will hold up . i use my 948's for racing i use the SBC 350 ones for endurance racing so i swap transaxles out to dial in the gearing for the track we are running at . the 1st swap i did was about 10 years ago had a ABA chevy pickup truck in my back lot with a very good rebuilt 1980's carbed SBC motor in it so the cost of the motor was nothing . i started the swap after i closed up the shop on a friday finished it that next wednesday putting a total of 61 hours into the swap from pulling the stock motor out to having the car running and driving wed night . the total cost was just about 3000 dollars . the job weather relating can be done in your driveway with no major tools needed . there are a number of places that sell kits i have used two of them but i rather build most every thing my self for the swaps . the bell housings and clutches are not all to much you can buy the bellhousing adapters for 80 bucks , non race clutch kit is 400 to 500 for the street / strip clutch it will hold up , i do dual masters with in car brake dias adjuster it's about 400 dollars . on my two SBC cars i run carburetors and air gap intake manifolds so they don't fit under the stock hoods i cut down the hoods body lines and razed the center part up by 2" to clear the top of the carb making cowl induction hoods . you could be cheap and buy a cowl scoop for a hood but they look cheap and don't fit the body lines of the cars at all . unlike dealing with the EFI for the LS swaps i have done . the carb setups are real easy to wire every part of the stock 944 wiring for the motor gets removed and you only have a few wires to make the SBC motor to run . cooling that too is very simple an aluminum radiator from summet to fit the opening and have the cooling i needed was 300 dollars hoses another 100 bucks . i have roller rockers in the car with a mild cam vortech heads on the dino the car puts out 368 HP with 365 FT torques . added weight is all in at 68 more LBS over what the car started at before the swap . i built my own exhaust systems for the cars average cost for a steel system is 200 dollars . SS steel will cost more needless to say .

944 swaps seem great for racing... If someone could create a V8 swap for a 996 that is fully pre assembled and just bolt in... They would have a full time business...

it's even great in the street ! my feeling is the 944's should have come stock with a V8 motor the 4 cylinder motors are really crap ! they sure could have come up with some thing better then the idea of using 1/2 of a 928 motor . then again ford did that for the pinto or was it chevy with the vega and we all know what a great cars they are ???? for the same cost if not lower cost to rebuild a 944 motor you can do a swap to a LS or SBC and have more then twice the HP and torques . as for putting a LS motor into the 996 or 911's it's also been done many times . we did a SBC into a 914 using a G50 trans many years ago i would think the G96 would also be a good choice . the tip tronic trans i wouldn't try i personally don't like the tip tronics trans . i did install a quife 6 speed sequential into my 948 LS6 tube chassis car . being for the 996 it took some work to get the oiling with the coolers to work keeping the temp in check the trans gets turned around and flipped upside down . also at 1st we were having problems with the paddle shifters the floor shifter would work fine but the paddles were lazy as hell .

I have been daily driving my 944/LS1 for 4 years without issues. I also use a dual master setup for brakes.

the LS is a good motor may not be a all time great but they offer very good horse power and torque performance parts are every were and low cost so they make for a great trouble free motor both for the street and for the track . the weight compared to the stock 8V 944 motors is not that much more . i did not like the hydro boost personally what i didn't like is the feel and the lack of front to rear brake bias adjustment . the dual masters has a very smooth and light feel to the peddle . this i personally find nicer for left foot braking as i use more of the side of my foot for that then straight on like i do with the ball of my right foot .
