Conversion questions ?

What would be involved, and how hard would it be, to put a 16 valve head on a 1987 951. It has a stock 8 valve head. I was just wondering if its possible, and would there be any benefits.

It wouldn't be very easy as the coolant passages will not line up (machining required), intake nor exaust will not bolt up. Since obviously the cams won't bolt up either, pretty much nothing is bolt on...

Oh man, what are you thinking? You're too anxious about the car!!! Believe me you'll be more than happy with it w/ just some chips(for atleast a little while). The turbo is highly addictive, you've been warned! Plan on spending more money to upgrade it later down the road.

ImClueless 01-03-2003 04:21 PM

LOL, i hear ya high boost. I mind says basic rebuild. make the engine strong, make it last. But my heart says, maf, chip, boost controler, and list goes on and on..

Whats a guy to do...

ImClueless 01-03-2003 04:24 PM

so after i get the engine rebuilt. what should be the first mod. somthing subtle yet i want to notice it..

highboost951 01-03-2003 05:21 PM

Here's the three most inexpensive bang for the buck upgrades:
#1 $290 Guru computer chip upgrade w/ reliaboost(like a lindsey boost enhancer) also includes 3 bar fuel pressure reg.
#2 $225 test pipe(eliminates cat)
#3 $250 deltagate wastegate

ImClueless 01-03-2003 05:31 PM

ok, thanks high boost, what is a 3 bar fuel pressure reg. And what kind of HP gains would i see if i do all 3.

highboost951 01-03-2003 05:46 PM

instead of having an adjustable fuel pressure regulator($160), this one is preset at 3 bar or 43.5psi.

Highboost....

So what would the real world numbers be for that kind of a mod on a stock turbo 217/~185 rwhp?
What does the guru chips do ?? What does it actually change ? A/F mixture etc...

highboost951 01-03-2003 06:25 PM

Oops, didn't see the hp question. At least a 20%

highboost951 01-03-2003 06:26 PM

Yes, a/f ratios, ignition timing advance and retard, yadda yadda

highboost951 01-03-2003 06:27 PM

Oops, the main thing is the level of boost of course.

Scott R 01-03-2003 06:46 PM

Mine has all of the bells and whistles that HighBoost recommended, they are right on! I only wish that guru had been around when I purchased my chips.

Last but not least, don't forget to add a superior suspension to handle all that power.

ImClueless 01-03-2003 07:24 PM

how high does it kick the boost and will my stock engine handle the increased boost, and will my stock 951 injectors handle the 3 bar fuel pressure.

Scott R 01-03-2003 07:32 PM

I am running 14PSI at 5000 ft. This is with a wide fire headgasket that I installed last year.

Depending on the wastagate and controller, and engine management you can get 20 our of the stock motor. I think Wolfpri, and Grommit may have been running more on their "monster 951." Check the archives.

ImClueless 01-03-2003 08:06 PM

i was hoping to run 15 or 16 without problems, can it be done?
