So some very good news... I met a member of this forum at his collection of Porsches and donor cars and tried my DME in a known working car. Thank God, it behaved the same as mine, runs while the starter is turning, but quickly dies when the key is released. I bought a working DME from him at a reasonable price and headed home.
Even though it was late, I went to the barn and plugged it in. ...
The car fired up and ran! Woohoo! ;-)
Now to put the new interior in.

WARNING: WHEN ADJUSTING YOUR SPEED AND REFERENCE SENSORS -
To get at them, I had to remove the ground wire that connects the chassis to the clutch housing. If you do not reconnect this ground wire (or disconnect the computer) before cranking the engine, YOU WILL FRY YOUR DME!!!!!

You're welcome. A known good dme is worth it's weight in gold when it comes to no start 944's.

They are pretty cheap and a great tool to have instead of throwing $$$ at parts.
