O-ring for oil drain tube in oil pan
I'm buttoning up my rebuilt engine and I'm a little curious about this o-ring. The PET shows an o-ring between the girdle and the oil drain / return tube, but there's not really a place for it and I don't recall removing one. I ordered the part number referenced in the PET but it does not fit in a way that inspires confidence. There's not really a groove in the return tube or the girdle that it will sit neatly inside of.
Given that this tube directs oil into the sump near the oil pickup and the oil coming through it isn't pressurized, I wonder if it needs any sort of seal. I imagine most of the oil will flow through it as intended without one. What appears to the a groove is not a consistent depth because it's really just the space between the flange and the tube. They aren't square with each other. The 0-ring is slightly too large to fit well in the opening in the flange but not large enough to fit well around the opening if the idea were to pinch it between the flange and the girdle. Would Loctite 574 or a good RTV be suitable here? ![]() ![]() Last edited by spives; 09-24-2016 at 09:15 AM.. |

For the sake of following up I left the o-ring out and used a thin smear of Dirko RTV on the oil return flange where it meets the girdle.
