924S fuel leak

My '87 924S has developed a fuel leak at the right rear, looks like it is coming from the top of what I believe is the fuel pump. The car has also recently started to occasionally hesitate/stumble a bit upon moderate to firm acceleration.....but not happening all the time.

How difficult would replacing the fuel pump be for a complete novice? Anything else I should check first?

Thanks for any advice.

Likely you have a leak in your high pressure fuel line that is attached to the top of fuel pump.

If you have some metric tools it should be pretty easy even for a novice to remove the strap holding the pump in place and take a look at the hoses.

Look in the Pelican Parts website for a replacement hose. You should also get a new fuel filter and replace that.

You will need to get some pretty decent wrenches in order to loosen the bolts holding the hose in place.

Welcome to the forum, and ask for help if you decide to tackle it yourself.

Check all your fuel hoses

Like said before, it is probably a 30 year old fuel hose leaking. There are several threads on fuel hose replacement. Be sure to check the rubber fuel hoses under the hood, they may be cracked and ready to be replaced. Look for weeping around the ends. Flex the hose and look for cracks. Use your nose too. You don't want an engine fire. Good luck & have fun.

It could be a rust hole in the tank under the retaining strap.Ask me how I know. I sealed it with usual proprietary fuel leak patching products, but they fall off when ethanol fuel is used. Now use an aircraft fuel tank sealant successfully

...and replace the "in tank fuel strainer and seal".

Use opposing wrenches on all connections or you will damage the seals and hoses.

The 924S fuel tank is known for a crack in the top center of the tank. Removing the tank and repair is the only solution.

GL & welcome.

Thanks everyone for the input and advice. I've clamped off the fuel line between the tank and fuel pump, and the leak has eventually stopped. My next step is to remove the strap holding the pump in place, to get a closer look at the fuel line at top of pump which appears likely to be the issue.

That's a sobering photo! Looks like I need to add the other fuel lines to the list.

Although my car is relatively low mileage at 77k and has been generally well cared for and preserved in original condition, I suppose 30 years of age and Texas heat may have taken a toll on the rubber lines....

Don't discount your thoughts on the pump leaking. My green pump in my '83 944 track car leaked out the top of the pump this summer! I kept the pump for further review, but haven't taken a close look at it. Probably where the aluminum top is crimped to the body of the pump. I'd remove the pump from it's bracket, and pull it down some, start the car and see if it's leaking.

Most of the time its a hi-pressure fuel hose failure at one of the crimped fittings. These cars are close to or over 30 years now, and ALL rubber fails with time & conditions.

I am able to help with these hoses if not an emergency. My hoses are E-85 rated, crimped as original, and considered "factory-level" by most.

However, I am retired, have a lot of 911 fuel & oil lines to make up, and am trying to build a cabin up in the woods of NH to enjoy the wonderful fishing & hunting there.

I am happy to help wherever needed.

I have an 88 924S and it started leaking the same way several years ago and was told that it was a factory defect gas line that was recalled. Replaced line and fuel filter and was ok after that. Now if I can just get some other issues out of the way and get back on the road lol...
