power steering

My 84 garage kept papmpered daily driver has a power steering leak. What kind of fluid would guys suggest for a non track car. Also after sick child heals up I plan on replacing seals and the lines of the system. Are there any rebuild kits or must purchase sep. Any hints and suggestion very thankful for.

I'd recommend any dextron 3 atf, leave the rebuild to a shop that specializes in that sort of thing. Look in your yellow pages, I'm sure you have a couple shops that only do steering racks. Might cost about $150.

Yes, Dextron. Do NOT use fluid that is branded as "Power Steering Fluid", use Dextron ATF. The PO of my car replaced the reservoir and refilled the system with PS fluid instead of Dextron and it ended up with the PS rack being replaced because it was beyond rebuilding.

My reservoir leaks. Yesterday I went to the local Porsche garage and asked them for some fluid for an 86 944. The chief mechanic came back and sheepishly said "Don't look at the label" I did and it said "Honda"

$2/bottle.

I said to the mechanic that I had read that a particular fluid should be used and he just said to use the Honda fluid. As I was topping off my reservoir, he came outside, took a quick look at my car, made some complimentary comments, and hopped into his own 944 and sped off.

I figure that he wouldn't steer (sorry for teh pun) me wrong.
