Intro and question

Hi all. Just picked up an '87 924s last month and it's in relatively good shape. I'm new to the Porsche world, but I've been restoring my '77 Alfa Spider for the past several years. Plan on selling the Alfa so I have more room in the garage to work on the Porsche and so my wife doesn't kick me out! I've already adjusted the rear hatch locking mechanism and replaced the hood and hatch struts and also have replaced the two upper power steering hoses and reservoir and one of the steering boots and fixed a leaky washer reservoir.

I've noticed while driving that although the gear lever shifts easily through the gears, there is a notchiness or stiffness as you shift into or out of 2nd gear. Is this similar to what lots of Alfas have...a weak 2nd gear syncro?

Thanks!

Welcome to the nut house... LOL About 2nd gear. I'd drain the gear oil and check for brass colored streaks in the oil when it gets down to the last bit flowing out. Some will be normal. But a lot, it might indicate worn syncros. You might also just refill it with fresh oil. I use the Swepco Full Synthetic but be sure to use the proper oil. Not just any ol 90W will work. A fresh oil change might clear it up. How many miles on the car?

Good question! My next job is to replace the speedo/odometer gauge because it wasn't working when I bought it. I'm guessing over 130,000 miles. Planning to refill the tranny oil. Am I correct that this oil not only serves the transmission but also the differential?

Thanks for the reply.

I'd also do a hydraulic flush... you may be headed for clutch cylinders.

Yep, the official term is transaxle so everything is in one box. There is no separation between the differential and gear areas.
